Apple Calls it Quits on MacWorld Expo

Next news
5:10 PM - December 16, 2008 by Bestofmedia Team

Apple today announced that its 2009 MacWorld Expo will be its final appearance MacWorld expo. The company said that it, like many other companies during this time, is scaling back its spending. The company also noted that it started to scale back its shows many years ago.

Also, Steve Jobs will not be delivering the opening keynote to MacWorld this year, and instead the keynote will be presented by Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller. In recent years, Schiller has taken on an increasingly prominent role at Apple’s shows, and has accompanied Jobs several times on stage.

At Apple’s last WWDC, many analysts noted that Jobs took a very minor role in talking about new products. Instead, the stage was taken by many top executive and this was perceived as the beginning of Jobs’ transition away from his day to day role as Apple’s CEO.

According to Apple’s official press release:

CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference&Expo, and it will be Apple’s last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009.

Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers. The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways.

Apple has been steadily scaling back on trade shows in recent years, including NAB, Macworld New York, Macworld Tokyo and Apple Expo in Paris.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

While it is entirely possible that the expo will continue after Apple’s exit, it is now unclear how the show will proceed. Apple was clearly the main attraction at the show, and the company often announced new products at the show.

Or,

Like many `expos', they realize than less and less people go to them because they can see it online, quicker, and better, and likely buy stuff online easier and cheaper than going to see the `new' stuff that is crowded by stinky people. So they figured, let's not waste the money & time since not enough people care anymore.

It's supply & demand. They have the supply. We don't have the demand.

Good move Apple.

Cheers,

This is retarded , and im not just talking about apple. Our economy hits a slump so what do companies do ?? 1. they ask for tax payer's dollars to bail them out. 2 they lay off said taxpayers after they blow said bailouts.3 They put a stop on ALL inovation in the fear new products might equal expensive research. 4. close out and cut cos by shutting down advertising ventures. 5 they raise retail prices, and usualy pay a politican off to halt minimum wage hikes. and of coruse they again lay more people off.

what this spells is an economy that will only get worse. one they are layign of the very people taht "pay" for their bail out money, on top of that theywant to freeze wage hikes os every one bassically stay to poor to afford thier products. They close factories which cause the prices on items to increase as supply becomes more limited. Then they also raise thier retail price becuase the "bailout money is not coming fast enough" bassically it becomes a viscious cyle of them created less jobs , which in turn means less comnsumers to buy their products, which in turn makes the company loose even more money and thus the cycle begins a new with things only getting worse. on top of that they want tax payers to bail them out of thier poor buisness models.

not syaign that is move by apple is totaly bad, it is just a sign of the times. also a sign of the fact that things will only get worse, THIS is the cost of Bush Jr.'s Iraq war. and the only paln any one has is a 50/50 shot U.S. is quiteliterally walking on a tight rope. if obama's plan doesnt succeed at pulling us off , then we WILL fall. plan and simple thier won't be no grey area in this plan of his , only the 50/50 chance it will work or make things worse. Bushes "bailout" money is only postponeing the inevitable. I sure hope obama can turn things around i didn't really vote for him but at least he has a plan with some chance of sucess , i just hope his plan doesn't back fire like many analysist say it can.

Or maybe it's just because they are not a computer company anymore and they know it. What use do they have for a "stodgy" computer show nowadays? It's all about the music player and cellphone business for them now. They primarily cater to the trendy young adult market, whom are more concerned with style over substance. And there are few things stylish about a computer show. I used to have a fond place in my heart for Apple and their "dare to be different" attitude but no more. Apple has lost it's soul.

Actually, it started going down hill when Steve Jobs went on a murdering spree to split it into Horcruxes, for the last decade Bill Gates has been slowly destroying them.

I don't need an english "corrector" my english is fine(I am a Born U.S. citizen) , it's my typing that stinks, particularly late at night. Saying I need my "english" corrected is insulting to my intelligence. So please conisder your words more wisely, as there are such things as typos, that have absolutely nothing to do with how good or bad someone's english is. It's not me that needs to go out of my way for a silly news article website that is all together not that important. The site is the one that needs to set up a spell checker to catch typos

I am glad you enjoy some of what I have to say, my typos are not all that bad at times, to just read through and ignore.
