'Call of Duty: Black Ops 3' PlayStation 4 Beta Scheduled For August 19

Multiplayer betas continue to be a popular two-way street for developers. Not only does it give them an idea of how the game's systems will work with the final product, but fans can also get a sneak peek at their favorite games. No series has benefited more from this than the Call of Duty games, which attract millions of gamers from around the world.

At E3 this year, Treyarch Studios announced the next installment in the Black Ops series, called Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. The studio, known for implementing the popular "Zombies" mode in the shooter franchise, finally revealed that the multiplayer beta for the latest game is set for August 19 for the PlayStation 4.

More information is bound to come soon, with the beta coming in a month, but the fact that it's showing up first on the PlayStation 4 is a big twist for the franchise. At past E3 events, Call of Duty always had a big spot at the Xbox event in the morning. However, that changed this year. We didn't see any Call of Duty news at the Xbox briefing. Instead, we had to wait until that evening for the franchise to show up at the PlayStation event. The switch in camps means that PS4 players will have a few pieces of content first, ahead of Xbox One owners.

Still, both sides will have a big enough fanbase for the game's release, and then welll see if Activision's move to throw support towards the PlayStation side will be a worthwhile decision that sees the franchise at next year's PlayStation E3 event.

If that screenshot isn't doctored, it looks pretty damn good to me. CoD isn't the problem... the type of players it attracts (foul-mouthed under-aged kids jacked up on Mountain Dew) is the problem. If only there were some way to force age authentication with PSN and XBox Live accounts.
