Modern Warfare 2 PC: No Dedicated Servers

Next news
8:00 PM - October 19, 2009 by Marcus Yam

PC gamers won't like this.

One of the greatest things about PC gaming is that people can set up dedicated servers for multiplayer matches. None of that silly peer to peer stuff that might give the host an advantage, not to mention that dedicated servers typically have connections that are capable of supporting a greater number of players with smooth and stable results.

Unfortunately, it seems that Modern Warfare 2 won't be having any of that. Joystiq heard on the from Infinity Ward's Ryan Bowling on the Bash and Slash podcast that matchmaking within Modern Warfare 2 would be reliant on proprietary server technology (called IWNet), and wouldn't allow users to host their own dedicated servers.

While those playing COD4 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 have plenty of fun without the need for dedicated servers, there's still a lot to be said for having dedicated clan or local servers where everybody knows your name.

There's a big petition thread going on in the official forums. Click here to check that out.

On the bright side, the PC version isn't delayed.

Yeah, its not delayed but with no mod support and no dedicated servers, its basically a glorified console port. Fuck you, IW. Way to spit in the face of the players who helped make the COD franchise popular.

Because of this, I canceled my pre-order. I wont be purchasing the xbox or ps3 versions either.

Many of us have signed a petition asking for dedicated server support. Link located here --> http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_ [...] i?dedis4mw

WTF?!?!?! ARE YOU F*** TRYING TO MAKE THIS MORE LIKE 360/PS3 on the PC!???!? I was hoping to have a good time on a private server with me friends.... this is pure cr@p. Guess like no MW2 for me eh? HOPEFULLY, Crysis 2,etc won't do this.

PS: Sorry for the all caps, I was really pissed.

Well, Infinity Ward has proven they have lost there way! No dedicated server in Modern Warfare 2 and they think I will pay 10 dollars more for their version of e harmony gaming to play people they think I will match best with? I play to game to kill communist, not join a communist social network! Are they crazy? I won't be buying this game anymore.

Well obviously 360/PS3 is everything that's right with gaming...I mean they don't have real communities...there isn't more than 16 to a server, every game costs $10 more than PC...you pay a measly $10 here and there for EVERY map expansion pack, whats to hate?

F*** YOU IW.

LOL!

Way to perpetuate the cycle that is destroying PC gaming. Stupid devs create a featureless/buggy game which gets released. People decide the game isn't worth the money and pirate the game. Stupid devs look at the income statement and decide to invest in consoles more.

What a joke. Won't be buying this.

I was really, really looking forward to this game. And honestly, was really looking forward to getting back into the dedicated server FPS scene. I used to play with a clan back in the Medal of Honor days ALL THE TIME. I haven't been involved in online FPS gaming for quite a while. Have enjoyed FPS offline, but it's nothing like the constant fun involved with playing on a team of the same people with regularity.

I'm extremely disappointed in hearing this. Frankly, if it's going to be the once and done single-player game that COD4 was, I'm probably not going to be asking for it for X-Mas after all. No point in asking my wife to spend $50 on a game I'm going to play for 3-4 hours and be done with.

And another $50 lost for IW from me as well. If I wanted to game like a console I would buy it for my PS3. But I won't be. Guess it's Borderlands for PC the rest of the year for me. Who's with me on this...

Ok, so this is really, really dumb. This will kill the PC sales. ppl will just pirate it and find some workaround to be able to play online, and in the end Activision/IW will blame piracy and stop releasing future titles on PC because of it, when in reality it was only their own stupidity.

Until Activision shuts down their online authentication, killing the game, in order to get you to buy COD MW2. Laugh now, but it will happen. More reason why online authentication should not be allowed.

If you have never played on a PC, and your multiplayer experience has only been delivered to you

via matchmaking, then you will never really understand. But try to imagine a host hosting a game

while never turning his console off, and you can always reach that room and play there whenever

you want, night or day, because its always on. Now imagine that host has a Pentagon grade

internet connection and his X360 can handle 64 players in that room. On top of that, the guy whos

the host is actually resurrected Ghandi, so you will all be treated with respect, anyone using

racial slurs, being offensive or just detrimental to gameplay experience via TKing or exploiting

glitches, is going to be removed from that server forever.

Now imagine dozens and dozens of custom maps running on that server, which you will get for free,

because IWs not making them. Then imagine entire communities and forums built around that one

room (server). You recognize people who visit that same room, you befriend them, you have fun

with these familiar folks.

The story goes on, and thats what were missing. All of it is gone.

This is how you kill a game.

Consoles are welcome to keep there p2p games. I don't want any part of it. No longer pre ordering this game, and unless it has a solid detected server functionality I wont be buying it.

I just don't get you Activision, MW is one of the major PC games that isn't affected by piracy in the sales department, and you pull a stunt like this? I'm passing on this one, and I was rather excited. =[

Unacceptable Infinity Ward. I had COD4 for my PS3, then after purchasing my friend's PC version of off him, I had a blast with it (custom maps, mods, m/kb, smoother/better graphics).

I guess I'm going to be spending my money I put aside for COD somewhere else (Borderlands?).

  • By Travis Meacham Maybe the gamer on your Christmas list is more of the creative type, and you'd like to get a gift that encourages their creative side and their love of games. If that's the case, the FPS Creator from Enteractive and The Game Creators could fit that bill perfectly. The FPS Creator is a program for PCs that allows users to create complete first-person shooter games without writing a single line of code. It uses a simple drag-and-drop interface consisting of a set of pre-fab objects - weapons, furniture and enemies - and a design space where game levels may be constructed. It takes a little getting used to, but with some patience and the manual's step-by-step instructions, your gamer will be off and creating in no time. FPS Creator is packed with potential, and tools to help you realize same. FPS Creator reminded me of the Neverwinter Nights Toolset that came with both NWN games. The interface is pretty similar, and both use an object-oriented, scripting-supported graphical interface. FPS Creator can only take a game-builder so far without doing some coding, though. While it can design levels, drop in pre-made enemies, configure some simple A.I. routines, and populate each level with weapons, objects and ammo, those who really want to get into the finer workings of game design, will have to learn some scripting. Thankfully, FPS Creator has an active forum attached to its website. It offers a multitude of tutorials on using this tool, scripting basics, and even entire scripts gamers can copy and paste to suit their needs. Bear in mind that these sorts of game-creation tools deliver only what builders put into them. Novices won't build something to rival Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but they might learn the basics of videogame design and level construction. Also, for anyone who's ever considered a career in game design, FPS Creator will give them a real taste of the work involved. This isn't a game unto itself, but it is an easy-to-use tool that introduces people to level design for first-person shooters. FPS Creator takes a little work, but creative types will find the results rewarding, and just might end up getting involved in a mod community when all is said and done.

  • Our test system for this article employs the Asrock 939 Dual SATA 2 motherboard, which is packed with an abundance of upgrade-oriented features. It supports native 8X AGP, PCI Express x16, single- and dual-core Socket 939 processors with dual-channel DDR memory, and even socket AM2 CPUs and DDR2 memory with a daughter board, which we used for testing. While searching online auction sites, we have seen people spending $200 or more for a Socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 4800+. It’s one of the fastest Socket 939 dual-core CPUs produced, but the device also represents a lot of money considering you can buy an even faster AM2 Athlon X2 for well under $100. Those stuck with Socket 939 will need to search the Web long and hard for a well-priced dual-core for their motherboard, but our AM2 compatible motherboard gives us the convenience of opting for an AM2 CPU with very little trouble and expense. We chose the following CPUs to examine the effects they have on gaming performance. First is the AMD Athlon 64 4000+. It’s base don the San Diego design, runs at 2.4 GHz, sports 1 MB L2 cache, and is one of the faster single-core desktop CPUs made. The direct comparison dual-core to this device is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2.4 GHz 1 MB cache per core). Next, we chose the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 + dual-core, which has a 2.2 GHz Manchester architecture with 512 KB L2 cache per core. The single-core direct comparison would be the A64 3500+, so our A64 4000+ should have an advantage both in clock speed and L2 cache in single-threaded applications. And lastly, the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ AM2 dual-core is a 2.8 GHz Windsor design with 1 MB L2 cache per core. With these three CPUs, we should get a good look at single- versus dual-core in gaming and have a good idea about how CPU clock speeds affect game play.
