Viewsonic Set to Unveil 22-inch Tablet at Computex

By - Source: ITProPortal | B 18 comments

ViewSonic will be showing a 22-inch Android tablet at the upcoming Computex tradeshow in Taipei.

It won't be the kind of tablet you will be carrying around in your briefcase or backback, but is pitched as a "smart business tablet monitor" - a commercial touchscreen monitor to the older crowd among us - that could target the interaction between businesses and their customers.

The tablet will reportedly run Android Ice Cream Sandwich, while a version with Windows 8 will be available as well. There is no further information at this time and we will have to wait until the official unveiling on June 5 to learn more. However, it is reasonable to assume that the "Touch&Connect" screen will at least run a resolution of 1080p or 1440p.

I would carry that thing around in a backpack and whip it out while I was in Starbucks so all the itard hipsters could bask in my 22" glory.

This seems like a tough market to enter, since almost all places I've seen that use touchscreens to allow for customer interaction use iPads with customized software. Pretty much every company at the Chicago auto show used iPads.

iPads are all the rage but it's tough to argue against a larger screen and higher resolution with a tablet that is customer facing. Larger screen size also has benefits with continuous all-day use reducing worker strain.

Um, more than twice as big with half the resolution. What's a comfortable working distance for it? Longer than your arms? 22" seems just plain silly for a tablet. And what the heck are you going to carry it around in? It isn't all that portable.

Thought of this two years ago. I didn't classify it as a tablet. I called it a Slab.

1080p is 2MP and 1440P is 4MP. 2048x1536 (aka a 4x3 2K resolution) is 3MP. If it is 1440P, then it will have about 30% more pixels. If it is 1080p, then it will have about 30% fewer pixels. Either way, the latest iPad isn't far off in either direction and most certainly does win at pixel density, but half the resolution? You seem to have very poor math skills. Not even 1080p is close to being half of 2K and 1440p is greater than 2K. Most people know that 3 (going by MP count) is not twice as much as 2 and is not even close to being twice as much as 4, let alone any greater than 4 at all.

Also, I'm surprised if you can't realize that you can carry something like this in a backpack or a briefcase type of container very easily.

Exactly how big of a market do you think there is for that? Really. A 15 or 17 inch laptop would be more useful. Tablets are great at what they do, and at the size they are at. But at what point is too big? If 22 is great, then 42 would be better? You could make a backpack for that as well. Not sure how durable a slab of glass that size would be in a portable device though.

You didn't ask about the practicality of a 22" tablet, you asked how it would be carried around, so that is what I responded to. How big the market for these is has no impact on what I said nor on what you said. Besides, just because some people might want a 22" tablet doesn't mean that a 42" tablet is reasonable. A 22" tablet can be very useful for some things and no laptop that I remember has a 22" screen.

This is probably cheaper to make than a laptop of that size. Also, how big it is should not change how durable it is. It can still use stuff such as Gorilla Glass and other very durable materials. Also, a backpack that could fit a 42" tablet would not be reasonable. A 22" tablet can fit in a reasonably sized backpack, but not a 42", so bringing that up is not helping your case. So yes, a 42" tablet would probably be too big.

It would be something like a 36.5" by 20.5" for a 16x9 42" tablet. That thing would be more than three feet wide by one and two thirds feet. To have a decent pixel density for the size in comparison with competitors, it would likely need an 8K resolution and a GPU that can handle it. It would need a huge battery (most of the weight would likely be the battery) and it would be incredibly expensive.

22" is a decent compromise, especially if it has the 1440p resolution. Considering that we don't even know what the actual resolution will be, the only thing that you have legitimately complained about is that you don't like the size. In that case, don't buy it. I don't plan on buying it either, but I can at least be unbiased about it.

I don't see a difference between this and an all-in-one desktop PC, except that it runs Android. Sounds like they have a finished product and want to test the market with Android, and then they can put Windows 8 on whatever doesn't sell, when W8 comes out later this year.

I think this could make a great monitor for an existing Windows desktop. You could do all the good things that Android can do, and then when you need to use Microsoft Office or whatever, you can switch the source to your Windows PC and keep working. Get a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the transition should be seamless.
