Let's turn our attention to the voltage regulator for a second: An old style three-phase regulator is built into the board - there is also a slot for a second voltage regulator with three phases, which contains an additional unregulated fan. In parallel operation (intended particularly for hardcore overclockers) this translates into a six-phase regulator, which produces higher background noise. However, the small board need not necessarily be plugged in.
