MythTV Plug-ins

MythDVD

MythDVD serves two purposes: first, as a means for DVD or VCD playback, and second, for ripping DVD images for safekeeping purposes. MythDVD can output to internal or external video players and store the main menu from a DVD as an MPEG4 AVI for placement in the MythVideo collection with options to make trade-offs between storage space and playback quality.

The latest version supports fast ISO creation, improved DVD menu scaling logic, improved fastforward and rewind, plus a number of interesting fail-safe features (block key events or prevent accidental exiting during DVD playback).

MythFlix

The MythFlix plug-in pulls down your personal Netflix RSS feeds to your rental history and upcoming titles queues. The bad part about this is that MythFlix lacks a formal configuration panel for the frontend, forcing you to insert username and password using a manual commandline script, which may then be viewed by the MythTV frontend once its queues are downloaded into a locally-stored MySQL database.

Usability of the Netflix plug-in suffers owing to an inherent lack of configurable parameters from within the frontend interface. Even though it's a nice inclusion, it still has some ways to go to reach real usability. Again, herein lies the beauty of open source software - if one were so inclined, such capability could easily be integrated.

MythGallery

As the name implies, MythGallery is a photo and slideshow application plug-in for the MythTV frontend. It categorizes and catalogues images kept within a user-specified directory path and arranges them in an array of automatically-generated thumbnails. MythGallery includes options to rotate images clockwise and counter-clockwise, import new images, access settings or invoke the slideshow functionality.

In slideshow mode, MythGallery displays images according to user-specified settings that include transition options like zoom, blend, and randomize just to name a few. MythGallery breathes life into still images to provide background visual imagery when the MythTV unit itself isn't being used for its video capture and playback capabilities.
