Back in November, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced that he planned to retire in May. In the time since that announcement, Intel has kept quiet about who will fill Otellini's shoes once he departs. Today, the company revealed who will be the new CEO of Intel. Not surprisingly, it's someone from within the company.
The Santa Clara-based company today announced that the board has elected Brian Krzanich as Chief Executive Officer. He will assume his position as CEO on May 16. In the mean time, he will continue in his role as COO, which he has occupied since January of last year.
"I am deeply honored by the opportunity to lead Intel," Krzanich said in a statement. "We have amazing assets, tremendous talent, and an unmatched legacy of innovation and execution. I look forward to working with our leadership team and employees worldwide to continue our proud legacy, while moving even faster into ultra-mobility, to lead Intel into the next era."
Prior to his role as COO, Krzanich held a series of senior leadership positions within Intel. He was in charge of Fab/Sort Manufacturing from 2007-2011 and Assembly and Test from 2003 to 2007. From 2001 to 2003, he was responsible for the implementation of the 0.13-micron logic process technology across Intel's global factory network. He has worked at Intel since 1982 and will be the sixth CEO in Intel history.
Though Mr. Krzanich will be taking over Paul Otellini's job of CEO, he won't also be assuming the role of President of Intel. Instead, that job has been handed to Renee James, who has worked at Intel for 25 years and was most recently executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Software and Services Group. She will also start her new role on May 16.
