Google's Nexus 7 Tablet Sold 4.6 Million Units During 2012

According to Asus, the manufacturer of Google's Nexus 7 tablet, Google sold 4.6 million units during 2012.

While the search engine giant doesn't reveal sales figures for its Nexus smartphones and tablets, mobile industry analyst Benedict Evans analyzed figures from Asus and found that the tablet, released back in July,  sold approximately 4.5 million to 4.6 million units, but no more than 4.8 million.

The estimates came from overall tablet sales reported by Asus, as well as numerous statements from the firm's CEO. Nearly one million units of the device were sold during October, while the tablet beat iPad's market share in Japan. Evans said that despite a November launch, Apple is estimated to have sold 10 million iPad Mini units, while Amazon’s Kindle Fire probably "outsold the Nexus 7 as well."

Google's next-generation Nexus 7 tablet that is expected to be announced during its I/O event (May 15 - 17) will reportedly have a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. As for the Nexus 4 smartphone, it has sold over one million units.

Still very happy with my Nexus 7, although I suspect the battery life is already beginning to degrade.

    Why not?
Why spend $800 for a tablet where you can have similar one at half the price? It's so mind boggling.

I've got a couple of iPad 1's that have been going for years without any signs of degradation. I think you should be ok for a good while yet unless Google cut corners on the battery quality.

    4.8, that's pretty low.

Will not part with my iPad with the inferior Google tablets.

    - Better build quality and materials
    - Better Apps (Apps come first on App Store, updated first on App Store and more and better choices)
-Better OS update support, don't want a device after 9-12 months I have to hack-up to get newest OS versions.

    -Superior Warranty extension
-Better Customer service if something goes wrong, ever tried to repair an Android device through the manufacturer, it's hell compared to Apple products

Main thing is Apps and Support, Android is still behind. I got 100 apps on my iPad that a variety of people use, getting the same selection and quality through Google Play isn't there.

Why is it selling in such low numbers? Is the difference between $200 and $350 irrelevant? Is the difference between 1024x768 and 1280x800 irrelevant? Okay, it was beaten by iPad Mini, but why did the Kindle Fire outsell it? KF is basically a kiosk for selling Amazon crap, and it's inferior to the N7 in every way.

Marketing, Amazon really pushes the kindle on their website. Apple pushes their Apple products aggresively to the point where Apple = cool/reliably/ease of use/expensive status symbol. Google doesn't push their products anywhere near aggresively. I don't recall seeing one Nexus 7 ad or anything about it (I also typically avoid ads in general by not watching TV and using various things to block ads on the internet, but I've definately seen the Ipad Mini being pushed and Kindle Fire).

Here in the uk there have been pretty similar advertising for the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini. I bought both devices and find despite the better specs of the Nexus 7 the iPad Mini performs better with most tasks and the 4:3 aspect gives the impression of a much bigger screen. My Nexus is only ever used now as a sat nav.

Let's see, I have a Nexus 10, made by Samsung and Apple uses about 70% of the Ipad I believe is from Samsung parts. Friend's IPad glass broke, cost about $150 to replace, haven't heard of any Nexus users cracking their glass. As far as OS update support, we just got a recent update to Jellybean, I didn't have to do anything other than select the install, in my notifications it said that the update was downloaded, which was automatic and I just had to install it. Let's see, in the next 2-3 months, Key Lime Pie will be released which is a major update. Given that a lot of people that I know with Iphones and Ipads are complaining how dated iOS is becoming. The Nexus line of phones and tablets all get easily updated, and since this is about the Nexus 7, you're totally misinformed.

I also have the satisfaction that I paid a good price for my Nexus device and will be buying additional devices in the next month or so.
