New Rumors Point to Microsoft Surface Tablet Controller

Microsoft has a mystery event planned for this evening, at 6:30p.m., and rumors so far say Redmond is going to introduce us to its own tablet. However, today, fresh reports cast a more interesting light on this rumored Microsoft tablet. According to the latest new reports, Microsoft is actually working on a tablet project called Xbox Surface.

A spec sheet, uncovered by Neowin, details a 7-inch tablet called Xbox surface. A second spec sheet found by liveside.net goes as far as to call it a tablet controller. This tablet will boast a 1280x720 resolution, an ARM processor, Bluetooth, WiFi, a battery that offers up to seven hours of use depending on what you're doing, and an SD card slot.

Interestingly, the Neowin spec sheet also details a second device, named only as 'Stationary Computing Device,' which will sport a custom 28nm 1.2GB GPU from AMD, two IBM POWER7 SCMs, a 250GB HDD, support for 1080p, Dolby Digital 5.1, and 22.2 surround sound.

It's not immediately clear if the stationary computing device described in the spec sheet is the new Xbox 720, or something else entirely, but with Microsoft's recent unveiling of SmartGlass, the tablet has us intrigued. Microsoft's SmartGlass allows users to use their touchscreen mobile device as a second screen or companion device for the Xbox 360 and is capable of displaying content related to what your Xbox is outputting to your TV.

There's absolutely nothing to suggest these rumors have anything to do with tonight's announcement, but the timing, as well as previous reports that Microsoft is to unveil a tablet tonight, have us a little bit more excited about the event.
