Windows 8 Criticized for its Part in Ailing PC Growth

Analysts have criticized Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 8 by calling it confusing and for playing its part in slow PC growth.

In a research note from analyst Chris Whitmore, the first reason Deutsche Bank attributed for decreasing its PC estimates this quarter was a "lackluster initial uptake of Windows 8." In addition to referring to the impact of "macro weakness" and the "fiscal cliff", he continues:

"As in past cycles we expect the introduction of a new Microsoft OS to spur an increase in PC demand. However...we believe Win8 will have a more muted impact than prior cycles for a several reasons: 1) Win8 reviews are mixed due to a confusing UI; 2) there is a lack of Enterprise interest in Window 8; 3) tablet form factor complicates positioning (Win8 vs. Windows RT), 4) continued substitution of PCs by iPads/tablets 4)."

Usability expert Jakob Nielsen said Windows 8's downfall is its "confusing UI", which is other known as the user interface. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White added that Windows 8 orders have been weak. "Much lower than PC makers originally expected a few months ago."

Paul Thurrott, a technology blogger and Microsoft insider, had recently said that Windows 8 PC sales have fallen 'well below' Microsoft's projections.

Computerworld, who has tracked usage patterns of Windows 8 in the months prior to its launch and during its release, found that the OS "is being run by less than a fifth as many people as ran Windows 7 in the same months before its debut."

According to a survey, more than half of consumers haven't heard of Windows 8, with those who are aware of the operating system simply not interested in the platform.

With a $1.5 billion investment in marketing for Windows 8, four million units were sold in its first three days of availability.

  • PC growth is down because of the surge in smart phones and tablets. The simple truth is that there is a large group of people who used to buy PCs for internet and email. Those people will never need a PC ever again.

The Microsoft hate is absurd. I LOVE my Lumia 920 and after 1 week, I love the speed and stability of windows 8 on the PC. It took me one week to go from Meh to Love.

I predict a swift service pack for 8 will be released bringing back the option for a Windows 7 style UI.

So, according to these clueless "analysts"....Windows8 has had a larger negative impact on PC sales than the simple fact that people don't have a lot of money to waste....and a lot more people are still worried about losing their jobs... So, according to these "analysts", all these people that are unemployed, living on limited budgets or trying to save money incase of they lose their jobs, would all be buying computers if it wasn't for Windows8..... I want to be an analyst.... Get to make fictitious claims with no factual backing....

Zak Islam once more publishing "analyst opinion" articles to bring down any product that isn't made by Apple. It's getting predictable, Zak.

My parents, for example, use the computer for checking email and surfing the web. At the moment they are using my old gaming PC I built back in 2002 for it. Now they have talked about ditching the computer all together and picking up a couple of iPads. Some people just simply do not need a desktop machine if they have a tablet and/or smartphone.

Me personally... not a fan of Windows 8 so far. But I'm trying to like it... I really am.
Just bothers me having a tablet interface on a machine that is not a tablet. I'm sure there are several other people that feel the same way I feel, but the fact of the matter that performance PC users are a minority. If the trend toward tablets continues... we might be the only traditional desktop users left.

As a gamer what is the need for Windows 8? I don't need a tablet interface shoved in my face and I have no want for another store. Can anyone list any pro's?

While I am fine able to addapt the new UI changes, but I konw many dont.

the biggest problem isnt the metro UI. It is the App store itself, then another big one is Microsoft stupid decision not to into an Option to change back to startmenu, which cost them million of sales. There are plenty of mod like start8 can easily fix this prob, which prove that the startmenu is there, just Microsoft disable it. The beta win8 does have a registry method to re-enable the startmenu, but the release win8 remove it.

The guy inside who decide to completely remove the ability use startmenu in Microsoft need to get fired. Microsoft should just release service pack or patch to ENABLE this feature for the people who prefer the "legacy" UI.

Because something that just came out has everything to do with a failing market.

    Wrong.

Tomfreak, the metro UI has every bit of the functionality of the start menu, and you can even customize it a lot more. After going through the Win 8 beta, I never once missed the start menu.
