There hasn't been too much news from id Software regarding the next Doom game since its public showing at E3. However, the developers are moving to continue to make progress in its development, to the point where the closed alpha multiplayer tests are starting soon. In fact, it starts on October 23, 12:01 am EDT and runs until October 25, 11:59 pm EDT.
The weekend session features a limited amount of gameplay, mainly because the purpose of the test is to receive early data on how players connect to the game's servers and how the overall system handles the small number of players before the beta in 2016.
In fact, there's only one gameplay mode (six-versus-six team deathmatch), one map (Heatwave), and only six weapons and two equipment items. In addition, the map has a few power-ups in the area such as the Demon Rune, which turns the player into a terrifying Revenant complete with the rocket launchers and jetpack; the one-shot kill Gauss Cannon; and Quad Damage and Invincibility boosts. Obviously, all of these extra goodies have a limited time use.
If you don't want to wait until 2016 to try out the game before release, there's a chance you might be eligible for the alpha test if you bought or pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order before or on May 26, 2014. The Doom beta code received along with the game not only guarantees access to the beta, but it also throws your name in the ring for a shot at joining a select few for the first rounds of tests for Doom's multiplayer experience.
