'No Man's Sky' Arrives June 21

At Paris Games Week last year, Hello Games teased that its upcoming game, No Man’s Sky, would come out this June. Now, we know the exact date of the highly-anticipated sci-fi exploration game: June 21.

Social Skills

In conjunction with the announcement, Hello Games released some additional details about the game. As you go travel in the expansive universe, you’ll eventually meet other races. These beings might not speak the same language as you, so when you meet them for the first time, it will be difficult to understand them. The only way to fully understand the foreign language is to continue to interact with them, explore other parts of the world and find artifacts.

However, there is a chance that you could easily offend your new acquaintances if you talk to them without knowing what they're saying. If you’re looking to barter or trade for items, they could sell it to you at a higher price or even steal an item back from you. Even worse, the inhabitants could even attack you. In short, you’ll need to take your time and explore your surroundings if you don’t want to start off on the wrong foot on a foreign planet. All in all, there are about 18 quintillion planets to explore.

To Pre-Order Or Wait

With a release date comes pre-orders. If you pre-order the game on Steam or GOG ($59.99), you’ll get a digital copy of the game as well the fast and powerful Horizon Omega ship. If you prefer to get the PlayStation 4 version, you can choose between the digital or physical copy. According to the game's PlayStation Store page for the game, a digital pre-order will give you a series of avatars for your profile.

There’s also a limited edition version of the game available for PS4. Aside from a retail copy, you’ll also get a steelbook case, a 48-page art book, a comic book, a dynamic theme for your PlayStation Network account, and a starter kit. The kit contains a ship boost, a weapon blueprint and something called “trader charisma bonus resources,” all of which should give you a slight advantage compared to other players at launch. However, Sony did not provide a price for the limited edition variant of the game.

More To Show

With a specified release date, Hello Games and Sony can now focus on heavily promoting the game over the next few months. GDC and PAX East are right around the corner, and E3 takes place one week before the game comes out. With so many fans clamoring to see (and hopefully play) more from the game, these shows are the best way for you to see No Man’s Sky up close before it comes out in June.

I'm honestly shocked that this is coming out. I imagined that the thing would just get stuck in eternal development, like all the Early Access survival games on Steam.

I'm positively surprised that this is coming out at the same time on PS4 and PC... I also didn't expect it to come to GOG, which is a great thing.

We'll soon see if VR is going to be a meaningful option for the game.

im going to bet money that its nice, but not much of a benefit... have details on what the game actually is come out? because i can't remember outside of a developer making a stunt man game, then deciding that they wanted to create the universe. im not convinced it wont fail.

This game has "PASS" written all over it. Each planet is like a giant bowl of assorted candy. Having thousands of bowls isn't better it's just more.

I was really looking forward to the Gametrailers review for this, sigh well that isn't going to happen. This gave is a strong competitor to Star Citizen and I foresee it overtaking it as its more accessible hardware wise, plus its coming out soon, unlike Star Citizen. The hardware requirements are high(8bg Ram,really!?) but not ludicrous(High but not I need to get a new computer on hire purchase).

What E3 Expo was this game originally shown on? 2013? 2014? I had forgotten all about it...not that I care about getting it.

You're right, the budget for this game was comparable to AAA games, but because they're indie, it's not worth more than a fiver. Same with Witcher 3, for that matter.

Be that as it may, Witcher 3 is an AAA title in all respects, more than most AAA titles. If you consider the developer excelence, dedication and vastness of that game it's kind of cheap. Nobody looked at Witcher 3 and thought... hey this is kind of a shallow game for the price.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very much enamored by the concept and what I've seen of NMS, but a LOT of people won't go for the old-school sci-fi style art/graphics, the relatively reppetitive and mellow tone of the game, the exploration aspect of it (as opposed to based buliding, multiplayer or action aspects). And although I'm sure the the game must have been especially hard to make for different reasons than traditional ones, the cost to produce with 10 people is massively smaller than bigger studios.

I'm sure that the price is probably set this way for two reasons: 1 - to be on par with console pricing, Sony probably doesn't want people who have both PS4's and PC's choosing the PC version. 2 - they probably think they can charge this from the reaction people have had and the hype they built. (They being Sony, I'll bet the developer would have been comfortable with a smaller price).

Ultimately I think this price will hurt their initial sales. This was a game I had on my rare list of pre-purchases (I only bought Witcher 3 on pre-order before) and now it's on my wishlist to buy after realease, reviews and maybe even waith for a sale. On the long run they should lower the price and they'll get more people involved, this game is kind of something you play casually for ages.
