CES 2012 to Have Up to 50 Ultrabooks, 55" OLED TV

CES 2011, which took place at the beginning of the year, seemingly focused on tablets and the Windows platform running on ARM's mobile architecture. However CES 2012, which opens its doors in Las Vegas just over a month from now, will reportedly focus on both tables and Intel’s new form factor, the ultrabook. Organizers of the show are already claiming that up to 50 ultrabooks will be launched during the event.

"We expect to see 30 to 50 new Ultrabooks launched at CES," said director of research for the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Shawn DuBravac at a CES Unveiled event in London.

DuBravac didn't specify actual manufacturers, but previous rumors claim that they have been waiting for Intel to launch the 22-nm Ivy Bridge processor refresh before unleashing their own ultrabook solutions. However Intel CEO Paul Otellini is due to give a keynote speech and officially launch the Ivy Bridge platform during CES 2012. That said, we'll likely see a huge load of product announcements based around Ivy Bridge, including ultrabooks.

But don't expect CES 2012 to focus primarily on the ultrabook form factor. DuBravac said that tablets will still be at the center of attention. More than 100 new tablets were revealed during CES 2011 back in January, and the CEA anticipates a similar number of new releases during CES 2012.

In related CES news, Samsung and LG Electronics will reportedly introduce 55-inch OLED TVs at CES 2012 in January. Little else is known about the TVs at this time although both companies supposedly want their products out on the market in time for the 2012 Summer Olympics which take place in London next July.

I'm not sure if I want to know the price of the 55" OLED TV. It will just be one more thing I won't be able to afford when it comes out.

Finally, I just hope they're not like plasma TVs in their early days (price wise that is) and hoping that they are not 20k a pop.

probably will be close to that at first until supply increases. I'd love to have an OLED tv. Been waiting for one since I got my Samsung Focus

oh, isn't 50 ultrabooks a lot? I assume that they mean 50 different models. I hope I'm wrong. One reason for apple's success is that they have one form factor (for the iPad as an example) and one manufacturer. 50 models sounds like way too much. maybe 10 might be better.

Every damn year they announce a bigger OLED TV at CES, and yet we haven't seen a single one released in the states (besides the '07 Sony). They're just showing off prototypes for the sake of it with no intention of ever releasing them (besides on a small scale in Korea or a few EU countries). It's getting very annoying.

50 new ultrabooks? Maybe 2 ultrabooks with same model but different sized SSD count as 2.

OTOH, have they fixed the OLED burn in problem?

Ooh, OLED tv's! Hopefully they'll drive down the prices of current TV's.

The best thing to happen to LED TV pricing was the launch of 3DTVs. Hasn't been a real new development since then.
