Mysterious Google Barge Likely to be Invite-only Showroom
For the past two weeks or so, a good chunk of the internet has been wrapped in speculation about the mysterious barge in San Francisco Bay. Some tech writers thought it might be a Google Glass store; others posited that it was a new server farm. Now it looks like we’re getting a bit closer to knowing what the three-story project is all about.
Several news organizations in San Francisco are reporting that Google’s barge is actually an invite-only showroom for Google X products. Those with good memory will remember Google X as the sub-division of the search giant responsible for Glass prototypes, self-driving cars and more. As the super-secret research arm of the company, Google X has become increasingly relevant as many of these projects hit the public.
The idea behind this showroom would be that it could be extremely secure as well as be easily moved and maneuvered to new ports at will.
