BT Reaches 5 Million Hotspots in UK and Ireland

BT has announced that the number of WiFi hotspots it has across the United Kingdom and Ireland has hit five million. The company revealed the news last week, stating that it's been adding 20,000 new hotspots every week for the past year.

Aside from announcing its milestone achievement, the telecommunications company also revealed some interesting details about its WiFi network. According to British Telecom, 13 petabytes of data were consumed across BT's WiFi network between April 2012 and March 2013. Not only that, but the company claims that the amount of time people spend on WiFi is increasing.

"The time Wi-Fi users spend online and the amount of data they’re using is up across our network," said Andy Baker, CEO of BT WiFi. "People are now so confident and comfortable with their gadgets, we've had to meet the demand with more hotspots in a wider choice of places – on the high street and in thousands of neighbourhoods across the country."

BT hotspots are available at Starbucks, GAME, John Lewis, Network Rail and Hilton, among other locations. They are free and unlimited for BT Broadband customers.
