On Thursday, as Windows 8.1 began rolling out to existing Windows 8 customers, Acer introduced its next-generation 8 inch Windows-based tablet, the Iconia W4. The company pointed out that the new tablet has a "vibrant sharp" IPS display, a feature Acer likely heavily focused on given all the negativity surrounding the previous model's display. This W4 unit also packs the hot-off-the-press Windows 8.1, meaning no long upgrades after pulling it out of the box.
"Equipped with an IPS technology display, the Iconia W4 provides consistent images, color and brightness from a wide range of viewing angles, up to 170 degrees, so it is ideal for sharing with others," reads the company's press release. "Furthermore, Zero Air Gap technology removes the air in between the touch panel and LCD module, reducing reflection and boosting readability even in sunlight."
According to Acer, the tablet's 8 inch screen will have a 1280 x 800 resolution, a 16:10 screen ratio, and viewing angles up to 170 degrees. The screen will be powered by a fourth-generation Intel Atom chip clocked at 1.8 GHz, and a battery promising up to 10 hours of web browsing and up to 8 hours of video playback. The device will also sport a 2MP camera on the front and a 5MP camera on the back that supports 720p/1080p at 60 FPS/30 FPS, respectively.
Acer's tablet will also provide a microHDMI port for connecting the device to an HDTV, a microUSB port and a microSD card slot for adding up to 32 GB of additional storage. The device will weigh a mere 0.91 pounds and measure just 0.42 inches thin, making it a good on-the-road extension to your Windows-based desktop or laptop at home.
"Compact enough to hold in one hand yet spacious enough for comfortable viewing, the Iconia W4 brings mobile productivity and media consumption to the next level," reads the press release. "It targets active and professional users who want a tablet that's easy to carry and convenient for the multitasking they do -- all in one sleek device. It comes preloaded with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013, at no additional expense, for managing documents, and an optional ultra-slim and portable keyboard for those who need to type as well."
The Acer Iconia W4 will be available later this month for $329.99 for the 32 GB model, and $379.99 for the 64 GB model.
In addition to the tablet, the company will also sell the ultra-slim Acer Crunch Keyboard, which is fitted in a soft synthetic leather cover that folds out while also serving as a tablet stand. The peripheral will measure 0.21 inches thin, connect via Bluetooth and recharge via a microUSB port. The company will also launch the microfiber-based Acer Crunch Cover that folds out into a tablet stand with multiple angle settings. The cover will keep clear of all ports, and will be available in several colors.
Other Iconia W4 accessory options will include the Acer Keyboard Cover, protection film, responsive passive stylus, power bank, adaptor kit with bag, and Micro USB cable, the company said.
