Over the past several years, I’ve reviewed a growing number of augmented reality (AR) glasses. For the most part, these shades share the same mission: to give consumers a way to enjoy video content and even work on productivity tasks with a Mac or Windows device via a 150-inch (ish) virtual screen.

Most of these glasses top out at a 120 Hz refresh rate and weren’t designed specifically for a gaming audience (though many can be used for gaming). That is changing with the Asus ROG Xreal R1, which is a collaborative effort from two big names in tech. Not only does the R1 boost the maximum refresh rate to 240 Hz to appease hardcore gamers, but it also serves as a breakout box for gaming on your PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch.

    240 hz at half the pixelated resolution is pure marketing is the same nonsense that the 1080p ar glasses hypermarket 110 inch screen experience.

    These are an interesting concept that definitely seems to lend itself more towards a portable gaming setup. Looking at the One Pro and these it seems like they're the exact same hardware and the hub which allows charging is another $40. Since the 240Hz mode isn't a hardware improvement that seems likely to be a weak spot moreso than benefit. Had these Asus branded ones been around $700 perhaps it would make more sense.

    This was tested on a 265K system which means it could have been connected with a single cable just like the handheld was. I certainly get testing the dock, but presumably if you've got a device with USB-C DP support then a single cable solution will work.

    For the love of freaking GOD these kinds of devices ARE NOT "AR GLASSES"!!! They are wearable displays (some of which have some minor, afterthought AR features). Those are extremely different product categories, that use very different technology.

    Wearable displays don't care out dimming or distorting your view, obstruction, or tracking you or your environment (beyond basic 3DOF for the glasses + some very meh quality 6DOF on some expensive pairs), but rather just display size and quality. Hell, instead of trying to present a clear view of your surroundings, most of the nice ones have a electrochromic layer that makes the back glass black! 🤷

    This is why the almost always use "birdbath optics", which are an affordable way to provide a very large, high resolution "floating" display, although they MASSIVELY shrink/obstruct the viewport of the real world behind the lenses, as well as requiring said lenses to be significantly darker.

    AR glasses otoh are obsessed with presenting as large, clear, and unobstructed view of the real world as possible, with full 6DOF tracking for the glasses, and active tracking of the entire room you are in, with CGI objects rendered within that world and acting within them accordingly. (I.e. a short alien might have to crawl up the side of your couch to reach you).

    This is why AR glasses have a bunch of cameras (kinda like a VR headset) and basically always use cutting edge "waveguide optics", which provide everything above (clarity, fully unobstructed + minimally tinted lenses, w/ minimal if any noticeable distortion) at the expense of being RIDICULOUSLY expensive to manufacture, and having a ~50° FOV limit with glass, with >50° FOV's requiring currently more expensive than a used car silicon carbide lenses that are only made at a single place... which just so happens to be ran by the US military... 🤦 (With any lens purchases requiring a license from the Gov).

    Birdbath optics like in these glasses have recently hit 70° FOV (aka the same FOV as the silicon carbide lens using >$10,000 Meta Orion prototype, which really seems to be the "critical threshold" for AR glasses), but they're sadly basically worthless for proper AR glasses for the reasons explained above.

    I think I've called them virtual display glasses, although wearable display is shorter and gets the point across.
