Bill Gates Uses 80-inch Touchscreen for Reddit AMA

Yesterday, Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates did an AMA on Reddit. For those not familiar, an AMA is an 'Ask Me Anything' that allows users of the popular community the opportunity to ask the poster any question they like. While many AMAs comes from everyday people, AMAs from celebrities or otherwise famous people are becoming more and more common. Even Obama has done one!

Yesterday, Bill spent quite a bit of time on Reddit answering questions about Microsoft, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and everything in between. Being Bill Gates, he got an awful lot of questions and at one point he revealed the machine he was using to answer them all was an 80-inch touch-capable device called the Perceptive Pixel. Gates described it as a huge Windows 8 touch whiteboard, but this is not the first time we've heard about it.

Last May, during an interview with Wired UK, Microsoft Vice President Frank Shaw said Steve Ballmer had traded in his phone and note pad in exchange for a big Windows 8 tablet. At the time, Shaw said it wasn't a consumer thing but that 'that's how all things start.' He later described it as Ballmer's whiteboard and email machine and said it's a device Redmond plans to sell, even if its initial plans do not include a consumer model. Speaking of the Perceptive Pixel, Gates said the price will come down and the device will enter widespread use.

Perceptive Pixel aside, Gates said he's also using a Surface Pro, which he got last week and is 'very nice.' You can check out Bill's full AMA here.

Call me lazy, but if I have to stand up to work a table, computer or any other electronic device then count me out.

I think you're missing the point. It's more a product demo for a classroom, or other presentation-oriented task.

I think that screen combined with speech command/capture could make a pretty compelling interface for online interaction.

80 inch touchscreen? It had better be curved inward, or that'd be really awkward to use.
