Lenovo's $10,000 Laptop That You Can't Have

By , Marcus Yam - Source: Tom's Hardware US | B 48 comments

Bling bling!

We're used to seeing blinged-out iPhones and consoles, but laptops are a whole other story. We stopped by Pepcom last week and while we were badgering/chatting to Lenovo about the ThinkPad Edge 11-shaped hole in the North American market, the Lenovo rep on hand distracted us with this little work of art.

We don't blame you if you don't recognize the hardware that is the IdeaPad U160. After all, she's barely recognizable under all that sparkle (it's impossible not to use the female pronoun when faced with a laptop this sexy). Lenovo couldn't actually tell us much about the laptop itself. We asked the rep if it was available to buy and he said no. We asked how much it cost and he said they didn't know, but after a quick conferral with another Lenovo rep said he'd heard "around $10,000." We asked why it existed and he didn't really know that either.

Not a lot of information, but a little poking around the web reveals that the glitzed-up IdeaPad comes courtesy of Computer Choppers (the same people that brought us the 24-carat gold MacBook Pro) and boasts a 14-carat white gold and diamond logo, along with highly scratch resistant platinum plating on the lid. Not only that, but the diamond logo actually sparkles thanks to an LCD backlight. Swoon!

Though Computer Choppers does specialize in making the owners of regular electronics a target for muggers, the glammed-up IdeaPad U160 (dubbed the UberLux) is actually the result of an Intel/Lenovo campaign called 'What's Your Idea of Fun?' Part of the campaign is a mod contest that will see the eventual winner head to CES 2011. Computer Choppers' founder entered the content with this IdeaPad mod.

Check out the 'What's Your Idea of Fun?' website for more pictures of the UberLux.

My idea of "fun" sure isn't one of paying such an exorbitant sum of money for such pointless alterations such as these, to a laptop. I could think of an infinite number of things I would rather spend $10,000 on. Why do people even buy things like this?

Honestly, that looks kinda ugly. Much as I hate Apple, you have to give them credit for their case designs. Nothing out there looks as pretty as a MacBook pro.

    screw this P.O.S ,
    with all that money I could get a monster rig i7 980X + 2x gtx 580 in sli + 12GB DOMINATORS + 4 SSDs + water cooling + huge 1080p 3dtv at less price.
    Who cares about diamonds?!

$10K is elaborate, but still not unaffordable. If it's a hobby, all hobbies have a way of costing money. As long as it's not $100K, it "could" still be sweat, love, & tears.

I rather have a machine that looks like a rust bucket instead of having diamonds and other crap but I crave performance. I am drooling over a high end $11.5k pci-e SSD right now.

They should have at least used a Mac to bling out.

If it has an intel gpu, then your idea of fun had better not include gaming.

Man, that finger print just kills it. I'm sure the one person who would buy that thing would demand that the finger get taken off of the person who did that.

Yes but that 10K laptop won't increase your electric bill, your 10K PC will. XD

honestly, you couldn't, I priced a few to the hilt rigs and they surpass 18k with only one 23" screen, and without 3D vision.

O shame and here I thought it might have a desktop NV580gtx or ATi6970 in it, how boring it only has mods / jewelery on it.

Don't tell CrApple they might legally harass Lenovo for doing something as stupid as CrApple does.

This is about as useful as having a cactus plan for toilet paper, ooooohhhh so comfortable Arizona style.

Why is this comment down-voted so badly? A lot of Apple's innovation goes into making their products look beautiful.

I challenge anyone to find a laptop that looks nearly as nice as a MacBook Pro. This Lenevo looks like shit save for the mirror top and diamonds.

I think part of the reason the MBP looks so sexy is that it's just uncluttered. No loads of extra dvd player control buttons, no rows of flashy LED's, no gaudy intel / nvidia / microsoft stickers all over the palm rest. Just plain billet aluminum. Mmmmm

Any marketing prof will tell you, that this kind of super luxury market is growing fast.
U could make toothbrushes with diamonds and there would be plenty of potential buyers (probably most of them russians and arabs)
