MyMiniFactory has announced the surprise acquisition of the world’s oldest and largest 3D printing file-sharing site, Thingiverse. Originally launched in 2008 by MakerBot, Thingiverse boasts over 8 million users and a repository of well over 2.5 million “things.”

Thingiverse has weathered more than its fair share of storms over the years. Launched by MakerBot as an open source community project, it started as a place where makers could store and share digital designs regardless of what 3D printer they owned. Stratasys acquired it in 2013 through the purchase of MakerBot, and in 2022, ownership transitioned to Ultimaker following the merger of Ultimaker and MakerBot.

Rees Calder, the newly appointed Chief Marketing Officer of Thingiverse, said in an interview that Thingiverse will join MMF as a “SoulCrafted” company while remaining a standalone platform. SoulCrafted is an MMF initiative introduced in 2025, championing the importance of human-made designs, curation, and a sustainable economic model for human digital artists.

It's been a while since I used thingiverse since I got my bambu, definitely feels dated compared to makerworld and printables. But even printables isn't perfect, the search works in a strange way, if you type in 4 words and all those words aren't in the title of the part then you get 0 results, you basically have to be less specific to find something.
Makerworld on the other hand is perfect, good luck to catching up to it.

Idk, there's a place for curated and guaranteed to print, but there's also an argument for a place for people to upload things that have no shot at printing as is. I often browse through thingiverse looking for things that I can remix to get what I need or that can be combined together. As in.. "I have no idea what that is supposed to do, but that little curved piece on the end is perfect for what I need." I'll chop that up and make something new.

Im not very creative, but at least that way I can participate in the creative process which gives me satisfaction. I dont want to just be a consumer of designs.

AND I also love my mini factory. Some of those designs are beautiful, and I'll gladly pay for such talented work.

Im just saying i hope they dont change the spirit of thingiverse too much. 100% curated by humans has a cost. It means they have to recover the cost somehow, and we'll lose access to those weird little widgets that were never printable in the real world (but still had a good idea)

Makerworld is good, but I don't think I'd use the word "perfect".

I'm sure it has some issues if you're a maker and upload stuff, but I don't do that so for me it is.
Does any other site have the ability to buy little screws or tubing or led lights to complete the build? Nope haven't seen any.
