Late last week, Lilputing spotted the Lenovo IdeaTab S6000 at the FCC, one of the company's first Android tablets sporting a MediaTek SoC. Although the company hasn’t officially announced the gadget's launch for the U.S., its presence at the FCC indicates that a North American arrival may be soon.
Lenovo first introduced the IdeaTab S6000 back in February (opens in new tab) during MWC 2013, one of three slated to launch in 2Q13. Lenovo called it a mobile home entertainment center, packing a 10.1-inch IPS screen and a MT8389 (or MT8125, Lenovo lists both) quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. It will also come with Lenovo Mobile Access, a unique service that allows users to connect instantly "out of the box".
"When customers first power up their Lenovo device, they will see an icon indicating Lenovo as their access provider," the company said. "Without having to set up a special data plan, they can immediately start browsing web pages, accessing their email and sharing content with friends using HSPA+ 3G access or through WiFi according to their specific configuration."
On the hardware front, the tablet will have a native resolution of 1280 x 800 and a wide, 178-degree viewing angle (149 ppi). It will reportedly weigh around 1.2 pounds, and measure just 0.34-inches thick. Other features will include a microHDMI port for connecting to an HDTV, a digital microphone, optional HSPA+, and a "substantial" battery (6530 mAh) that allows for more than 8 hours of continuous Wi-Fi web browsing.
The tablet will also feature 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage, a 5MP auto focus camera on the back, a 0.3MP pixel on the front, GPS with A-GPS support, Bluetooth v4.0, Wireless N connectivity, and a microSD card allowing up to 64 GB of additional storage. It will also use Google's Android 4.1 or 4.2 "Jelly Bean" as the OS of choice.
So far pricing and availability is unknown, so stay tuned. Lenovo says it "shines as a multimedia and gaming tablet", so it will be interesting to see how this tablet's MediaTek SoC performs one if finally arrives.
