ZTE Announces 5-Inch U887 Smartphone

ZTE has announced the U887, which joins the emerging market of 5-inch smartphones, with the handset boasting a resolution of 800x480 pixels.

Powering the device is a dual-core 1.2GHz MT6577 processor and 512 MB of RAM. The processor runs at the same speed as Samsung's recently announced Galaxy Grand, but the latter does boast twice as much RAM.

The ZTE U887 has a 5-megapixel camera situated on the rear, while a 8-megapixel one is found on the Galaxy Grand. The U887 also has a front-facing 3-megapixel camera. Powering the device is Android, but ZTE didn't specify which version of the platform it would integrate.

Currently, a launch outside China is unclear but ZTE may announce a global release of the device during CES in January. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer recently confirmed that the event would see the debut of its quad-core, 5-inch Grand S. Additionally, the firm is rumored to be working on the Android-Powered Grand X Pro.

As for its U887, the handset joins the ever-growing list of full HD 5-inch smartphones, which is expected to grow further next year.

Call me closed-minded but I'll never get myself a Chinese-made smartphone, despite the improving quality of its products. Chief among my reasons is the fact that ZTE has conspired with my country's former administration with some anomalous deals.
