Acer Iconia W4 8-inch Tablet Shipping in January?

Slashgear reports that the upcoming 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet from Acer, the Iconia W4, likely won't be appearing on the market until the end of January 2014. That will reportedly be for the 64 GB version costing $379 USD; the 32 GB version costing $329 may arrive at the same time or sometime thereafter. The tablets were originally slated to arrive by the end of October.

Packed with Windows 8.1, the upcoming tablet will feature an 8-inch LED-lit IPS screen with a 1280 x 800 resolution, a 16:10 screen ratio, and viewing angles up to 170 degrees. The screen will be powered by a fourth-generation Intel Atom Z3740 "Bay Trail" chip clocked at 1.8 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and a battery promising up to 10 hours of web browsing and up to 8 hours of video playback.

"Equipped with an IPS technology display, the Iconia W4 provides consistent images, color and brightness from a wide range of viewing angles, up to 170 degrees, so it is ideal for sharing with others," reads the company's press release. "Furthermore, Zero Air Gap technology removes the air in between the touch panel and LCD module, reducing reflection and boosting readability even in sunlight."

The device will also sport a 2MP camera on the front and a 5MP camera on the back, Wireless N connectivity, a microHDMI port for connecting the device to an HDTV, a microUSB port and a microSD card slot for adding up to 32 GB of additional storage. The device will weigh a mere 0.91 pounds and measure just 0.40 inches thin, making it a good on-the-road extension to your Windows-based desktop or laptop at home.

"Compact enough to hold in one hand yet spacious enough for comfortable viewing, the Iconia W4 brings mobile productivity and media consumption to the next level," reads the press release. "It targets active and professional users who want a tablet that's easy to carry and convenient for the multitasking they do -- all in one sleek device."

So much for getting this 8-inch tablet for the holidays. We're betting this device will show up at CES 2014 next month before it goes live to retail, so stay tuned.

8" is too small for use with a keyboard. It's fine as a stand alone tablet, but with the keyboard it is too small. Make it an 11" tablet with a keyboard for that price and I'd be all over it. Add an extra gig of RAM while you are at it.....

    ---- Toshiba Encore WT8/VT484,
    445g, 2-cell 20Whr, GPS (BCM4752 GNSS chips), HDMI-out yes, z3740.

    ---- Acer Iconia W4-820,
    430g, 2-cell 18Whr, Lacking GPS, HDMI-out yes, z3740.

    ---- Dell Venue 8 Pro,
395g, no list/Dell US, 2-cell 18Whr/info added by Dell UK, Lacking GPS, Lacking HDMI-out, z3740d (cheaper).

    ---- Lenovo MiiX II 8,
    350g, 1-cell/Japanese page/Nov 26, 17.5Whr/Chinese page/Dec 2, (Powermark tested 6 hours 38 minutes), GPS yes, Lacking HDMI-out, z3740.

Acer W4-820 is yet no sales, the spec is based Acer's current Japanese webpage, if finally Acer W4-820 is the sales version no GPS to be unluckily.

Having better portability the 8-inch slates would more likely be using for outdoors and travel purpose, well then, the GPS and HDMI-out are more necessary, it is basic requirements for US $399 to buy this slate (64GB).

Toshiba Encore WT8 (64GB)/VT484 provides GPS and HDMI-out, the battery is 20Wh, claiming the battery life up to 14.1 hrs, or 10 hrs User scenario (65% Web / 10% Video Playback / 25% Standby), or 11 hrs by The JEITA Battery Run Time Measurement Method.
Seemingly Toshiba Encore WT8/Vt484 is slight heavier 90g than Lenovo MiiX II 8", that is actually with slightly larger battery as well as metal parts, better stuff.

I'm pretty sure this is full Windows. I'm not even sure anyone but Microsoft is selling an RT device.

Why does everyone only use 2 gigs? I can't imagine it's that much more expensive.

I just got the Dell Venue 8" and I love it. Having owned an ipad and asus transformer, I like this tablet the best. I was interested in last years Acer tablet but the screen was horrible. Hopefully, they learned from that lesson. As far as processors go, intel has really stepped up the game on this one. The new atom can compete head to head and many times beats the Arm equivalents. What this enables people to do now is to run full windows 8 on tablets and be fully compatible with their laptops/desktops. As a result, I predict more and more people will begin to get tablets with windows.

The CPU supports 32-bits OS and therefore can only address up to 3GB. Probably Intel doesn't want you to realize their latest Atom CPU still have some way to go before it can support 4Gb memory, and asked every vendor to include only 2Gb RAM.
