Is TechSmith Camtasia free?
No, the main TechSmith Camtasia software is not free; it's a paid product. However, there are two ways you can use Camtasia for free:
1.) You can download the full-featured desktop version of Camtasia for a free trial (usually 30 days).
2.) TechSmith also offers a separate, web-based tool called Camtasia Online. This is a more simplified screen recorder that is 100% free and does not add a watermark.
Is TechSmith a One-Time Fee?
No, TechSmith Camtasia and Snagit is moving away from one-time fees for its main products, Snagit and Camtasia. As of their 2025 versions, they are transitioning to an annual subscription-only model

Education Discount: Students can receive a big discount and may also qualify for the Snagit + Camtasia bundle at a significantly reduced price. Educators also get a discount.

How we make money
Tom’s Hardware earns money from coupon pages on a commission basis. For every coupon page on our site, we have negotiated a deal with that retailer. Whenever someone places an order with that brand and applies one of our codes to their cart, we earn a percentage of the final order total back in commission.
