External, But How? Mobile Storage Solutions Compared
Maxtor Personal Storage 5000DV
We tested Western Digital's external drives back in the spring. Their excellent performance has certainly made their mark. Maxtor is pursuing a similar strategy. Its Personal Storage 5000DV offers a total of 200 GB at 7,200 rpm and a whopping 8 MB cache as well. This excellent unit is connected either by USB 2.0 or Firewire / IEEE1394a, with the latter offering slightly better performance. A new model was also presented at the IFA that has up to 300 GB of storage space.
Unlike Western Digital, Maxtor is focusing on backup tasks with its OneTouch. Why "OneTouch"? Well, there's a button on the front of the 5000DV that automatically starts the backup software. That's the secret.
The button is part of the OneTouch feature.
