Elon Musk says building his own 'TeraFab' chip fab may be the only answer to Tesla's colossal AI semiconductor demand — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang warns against 'extremely hard' challenge

Elon Musk is thinking about outsourcing some of Tesla’s chip production to Intel Foundry and even establishing the company’s own chip production operation, he said at the company’s Annual Shareholder Meeting event. Musk is perhaps the first executive of a big company to consider building an entire semiconductor production facility due to the extreme complexities and costs associated with such a project. Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, already reacted to Musk’s musings, noting that the head of Tesla may be underestimating the challenge.

“I think we may have to do a Tesla TeraFab,” Musk said. “It is like [TSMC’s] Giga[fab] but way bigger.”

I don't doubt Musk can do it with the sheer wealth he commands.

You can build a building to contain your super fab. But ASML can't magically roll out twice as many tools as they currently do, even if the demand exists. And good luck staffing it.

If he gets a new chip fab built, he needs focus on competing with TSMC, especiay since they drastically increased prices. There needs to be competition at least making RAM and some NAND.

Most of it is funny money. It's tied up in stock shares, the price of which would collapse if he tried to sell it all, or even a large amount of it. That's why he had to trick convince a bunch of other investors to finance his purchase of Twitter.

Now that Tesla shareholders approved his $1T pay package, he's probably working backwards from the targets needed to achieve it. That's how he determined the sheer number of chips he's expecting to need.

So, basically, he's either going to get his $1T payout, or break Tesla in the attempt. I'll bet a lot of the shareholders who voted for the pay package didn't consider how much damage he could do, in the simple attempt of reaching it.

TSMC doesn't make either NAND or DRAM.

and exactly wheres it going, whats powering it, & whats cooling it?

AI has already made the grid questionable in many places...and this terafab would require massive land footprint...and water to cool it....even ignoring the $$ you'd need & time to build it you have actual critical issues before a single stone is laid.

I wouldn't stop him though as he could lose some of his wealth and have it never get recouped & if in some miraculous way it happens? well thats beneficial i guess?

In other words: You are so busy feeling smart that you fail to see you have no clue.

You say Jensen doesn’t want competition. Nvidia make computer chips. The design them, sell them, make the software surrounding them. They don’t have their own fabs. And they have been incredibly successful, in part because they can choose the best fab and don’t have the overhead of having to build their own.

Tesla already make computer chips. Competition for NVIDIA would be Tesla making competitive GPUs and AI accelerators. And that does not depend on them building their own fabs. It depends on them spending huge sums of money developing better chips. Building fabs actually binds capital they could use to rival NVIDIA.

If Jensen was afraid of competition, you would see him pushing Musk to spend his relatively limited funds building fabs that will never be competitive.

In that case, both companies should get into the NAND and RAM business, as it is an area with an extreme lack of competition. Intel also needs to start competing in those areas as well since they have their own chip fabs.
