ViewSonic VSD220 Smart Display with Android Comes to U.S.
It's like an AIO PC, but based on a TI OMAP4 SoC and Google's Android 4.0 operating system instead.
ViewSonic said on Wednesday that its VSD220 Smart Display will be sold in North America in mid-to-late October for an ESP of only $399. It will combine a 1920 x 1080 full-HD 22-inch LED-backlit dual-touch panel, an ARM Cortex-A9-based OMAP4428 dual-core SoC (1 GHz) from Texas Instruments, and Google's Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system. It will also feature 8 GB of internal storage, although a microSD card slot will be available for added capacity.

According to the list of specs, the Android-based AIO will arrive packed with 1 GB of LPDDR2 memory, two USB 2.0 ports and a microUSB port. It will also have an Ethernet jack, a microHDMI port for using the display as an additional screen for your laptop or desktop, and two 1.5W speakers with SRS Premium Sound. Wireless connectivity will include Bluetooth v2.1 and 802.11 b/g/n. A 1.2MP front-facing camera rounds out the package, allowing users to record 720p video.
"The VSD220 provides users a PC-less web connection in an affordable format that is both self-contained and easy to use," the company said. "With a dual point optical touch screen and an integrated Android operating system with full Google GMS certification, users can enjoy a tablet-like browsing experience, a 22-inch touch-enabled Full HD display, and a traditional PC computer all wrapped up into one device."
The actual display's specs include a contrast ratio of 1000:1, a brightness of 250 cd/m2, and a response time for 5ms. It will also provide viewing angles of 170º horizontal and 160º vertical. "Scratch resistant 8H surface hardness ensures the VSD220 can withstand heavy usage in high traffic environments, while maintaining high quality touch experience," ViewSonic added.

joytech22 I think this would be a great first PC for my mum. Nice big screen for her to read with her bad eyes, easy to use (After I customize it a little..) and fast enough for any task she would require from it.Reply

ozicom I think this is the product of the year. Yes sometimes i have to power up all my PC just to check my e-mail but with this monitor i can check with only my monitor. I'm just wondering how much does this cost. And can we use the touchscreen features with our PC or is it just reserved for android?Reply

Johmama My big question is: could this maybe be used as a very large tablet? I realize most people don't want a HUGE tablet, but it might actually interest me (think: I'm using it as a second-monitor in my room and I want to walk out to my living room and sit on the couch and use a tablet). I think that would be awesome! Again, I realize it would be unwieldy to most people, but if it's possible to pick this thing up and move it around almost like a tablet, I'd seriously consider finally investing in a "tablet".Reply -

No battery. You'd need to have it plugged into AC. If you are ok with a cord then I don't see why not. -
