Acer, the company that released the very first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet earlier this year, has quietly launched the sequel originally introduced back in October, the Acer Iconia W4 tablet. Previous rumors had the tablet pegged for a late January release due to a delay, but the 64 GB version is available now on Amazon for $380 USD, followed by a 32 GB model for $330 at a later date (January?).
Arriving with Windows 8.1, the new tablet sports an 8-inch LED-lit IPS screen with a 1280 x 800 resolution, a 16:10 screen ratio, and viewing angles up to 170 degrees. The screen is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Atom Z3740 "Bay Trail" chip clocked at 1.33 GHz, 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and a 2-cell Li-Ion battery promising up to 8 hours on a single charge.
"Equipped with an IPS technology display, the Iconia W4 provides consistent images, color and brightness from a wide range of viewing angles, up to 170 degrees, so it is ideal for sharing with others," reads the company's announcement. "Furthermore, Zero Air Gap technology removes the air in between the touch panel and LCD module, reducing reflection and boosting readability even in sunlight."
The device also features a 2MP camera on the front and a 5MP camera on the back, Wireless N and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a microHDMI port for connecting the device to an HDTV, a microUSB port and a microSD card slot for adding up to 64 GB of additional storage. The device weighs a mere 0.91 pounds and measures just 0.42 inches thin.
