This Is What You Need To Run 'Evolve' On PC

2K Games' Evolve was hands-down one of the biggest games at E3 2014 back in June. The crowd surrounding the Evolve booth was massive, equaling that of EA's huge gathering for Battlefield 4 just a year prior. You couldn't help but stop and watch the action unfold as four gamers teamed up to take down a massive player-controlled beast. There's no doubt that Evolve will become an esports favorite once it hits store shelves on February 10 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

The minimum PC system requirements were released on Monday, revealing that gamers will need an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400 processor at the very least. Also on the list is 4 GB of RAM, 50 GB of hard drive storage, and a 64-bit copy of Windows 7. On the GPU front, PC gamers will need at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 or AMD Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB of video memory.

As for the recommended requirements, PC gamers will need at least an Intel Core i7-920 or an AMD A8-3870K APU. The GPU requirements include an Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 or a GTX 760, or an AMD Radeon R9 280 and 2 GB of video memory. The list also includes 50 GB of hard drive space, 6 GB of RAM and a 64-bit version of Windows 7. The game will support 4K resolutions right out of the box.

Developer Turtle Rock Studios also revealed what can be tweaked in-game, including texture detail, shader detail, model detail, shadow quality and particle quality. Additional adjustable settings include anti-aliasing, tessellation, VSYNC and screen resolution. The studio also stated that there will be no SLI or Crossfire support out of the box, but these features are definitely in the works and will be released as soon as possible.

Turtle Rock Studios announced just days ago that Evolve has gone gold, meaning development is done and the game has been shipped off for manufacturing.

"We have some beards to shave and hair to cut!" the developer reported. "Team members at Turtle Rock pledged to not shave or cut their hair until the game passed certification. For each inch of beard grown by the guys and hair cut by the ladies, we'd donate $50 to Child's Play charity. The total length? 227.5 hairy inches! That comes out to $11,375 raised for Child's Play – with the hair itself, if long enough, being donated to Locks of Love. 2K is matching the Turtle Rock Studios contribution, for a total donation of $22,750."

Evolve pits four "Hunter" gamers against a fifth that takes control of the Monster." The four players can choose to be a Medic Hunter, Trapper Hunter, Assault Hunter or Support Hunter, while the player controlling the Monster can choose to be a Behemoth, Goliath, Kraken or Wraith. The Monster can kill other smaller monsters to evolve and become more powerful.

I think the minimum specs needs another look over. A 580 or a 5770? The 580 is far, far stronger than the 5770 lol And the 580 is close, if only slightly slower than the 670. Seems like you used the numpad and hit the '8' instead of the '5' to be the GTX 550?

The A8 3870 is an odd chip to pull out as the recommended, i didnt think many people used those. It would have been better to say a phenom II 940/945 or higher, unless its looking for instructions that were introduced with llano that the original Phenom ii's didnt have? Also a 580 or a 5770? Is that a typo or some terrible optimization?

Are recommended settings close to what would support 60 fps on ultra? I have a 760 and was curious where I would stand.

    GTX 560, not 580 guys. Also, some old quad-core APU = i7, that's new.

  • Oh but you don't need a i7 for a gaming PC... :/ (sarcasm intended)

Am I missing something here? I thought even old i7s like the 920 stomped APUs in both single and multi-threaded applications.

    http://anandtech.com/bench/product/47?vs=399 (although it's the A8-3850).

Apparently, that particular i7 isn't a whole lot better than that particular A8.

But, considering that an i7-920 is a Bloomfield (i.e. 1st-generation) core i7 processor, first being released back in 2008, I would say the main takeaway from this is that the game is not CPU-dependent, so that players will want to focus more on their GPUs to play it well.

Remember when devs used to include demos of their games, partly so potential customers could gauge their PC's performance in contrast to said game? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

  • I'm curious why they specify Windows 7 as opposed to "64-bit Windows." Is this the reason I need to roll-back from 8.1 to 7? I can't put into words how much I hate the divide between app and programs, not to mention the "metro" UI.
