Chip-less Mod Tool Leaked for Nintendo Wii.

With all the raging and ranting about piracy going around these days – developers getting miffed about losing profits to piracy and people voiding warranties just so they don’t have to pay for games. Now you can mod your Wii to play your game backups without cracking open the case.

The new chip-less mod for the Wii recently popped up in some obscure forums and other tech sites and the links to download the tools required were axed shortly after. Maybe it is that the links are getting hit too hard and don’t work right now or big brother has stepped in and is trying to shut things down.

None the less, the instructions that have popped up on a few sites are as follows:

«Patch the ISO with the .EXE that comes in the download»

«Install the CIOS on your Wii»

«Install DVDX. Go to Advance and choose 249»

«Install Wii loader»

«Burn the patched ISO with ImgBurn»

«Run the loader»

The link to download the tools at GBATemp no longer works – however those intuitive enough with Google could easily locate functioning links. You can also find working links in comments sections of sites that have noted this news as well. I was able to locate three working links within a few minutes. However, since we are not in the business of linking things like that around here I must regret to inform you will find no links to download these tools here.

The original author of this project has announced that he as "officially" dropped the whole and will not continue working on it. However he has demonstrated that a chip-less mod can be done and it someone is definitely bound to pickup where he left off. We are sure that the community will be keeping their eyes peeled.

Even if piracy on consoles gets as bad as piracy on PC I doubt we are gonna see PC supported the way it used to be by 3rd party developers. I hope I'm wrong.

Actually that may make the PC the main focus for releasing games. Atleast with the PC you can protect each game with updated protections the consoles lack this ability. Even if this holds off the crackers for two weeks it means more people won't be patient enough for a pirated release and go buy it.

However if this ever happens and if it holds no effect then this will debunk the biggest excuse to leave the PC and focus on consoles. Which would strangely make every defender of piracy right...

NuclearShadowNot really. consoles like PSP can easily release a game that requires you to download a firmware upgrade or they can also pkg the new firmware onto the DVD forcing you to update before you are allowed to play the latest games. There's always ways around these things.

I don't think that people that know how to pirate software would need you to check their PC for spyware..

Consoles are easier to pirate than PCs are. Well mainly due to the fact that the smart money is on a prgram like Steam (Steam being the best one out) which is not yet available for consoles.

And Consoles will probably not get it short of becoming a PC.

But thats what I love about the Dreamcast. No modding needed and still plays burnt backup games or those really hard to find ones.

  • I had a modded wii some time ago, all my friends have got modded wii's and xbox 360's, there are like 20 pirated games on my pc, there were 30 on my wii, and in my opinion the fuss about too much piracy of pc games is bullshit coz my friends download an average of 30 games/year for their consoles. Note: the wii sucks so much that I sold it even while I could download and burn games for free all I want.

    P.S.
    dreamcast kicks ass

Pirated Wii games ? I have a chipped Wii and like 20 burned games but at the same time I also own at least 20 retail copies. Pirates do steal games but at the same time pirates are also gamers and and tend to buy allot of games too. It is confusing why would some one who could download for free, buy something ? I can answer that. I download games because I want to try out something I may or may not like if I like it enough I buy a copy. If its just crap I toss it in the trash or keep it to torture other people with its craptitude... To be honest I probably have bought more Wii games because I downloaded them and gave games a try that I never would have otherwise. Even rental fee's can leave me turned off.

Some games I just buy as its just known they will be good, almost anything by Valve or Blizzard I buy, preferably on release day!
