The dreaded power consumption test will surely disappoint fans of Intel's new Core i7, as these new processors are extremely power-hungry when overclocked.
A true power miser at stock speed, our $625 PC’s power consumption increased by 36% when overclocked. By comparison, overclocking pushed the power draw of our $2,500 PC up by 27% and our $1,250 system by 29%. However, looking at those percentages doesn't tell the whole story about overclocked CPU efficiency, since the load shifts proporationally away from the CPU as graphics capabilities are increased. Anyone extremely concerned about the environmental impact of inefficient hardware should avoid overclocking and high-end graphics and adjust their expectations accordingly.
