Cheap Thrills: Core 2 Duo E6400 Overclocked to 3.33 GHz

Overclocking Results: 417 MHz FSB

Using the stock cooler, we were able to reach 3.1 GHz at 387 MHz FSB and 1.45 V using the Intel stock cooler, where increasing the voltage only made the CPU overheat sooner. Adding the CNPS9700 LED brought down those temperatures phenomenally, but only got us to 3.15 GHz at 394 MHz FSB and 1.48 V before things once again got too hot. The big gun Gigabyte 3D Galaxy II liquid cooler brought far greater success:3.33 GHz at 417 MHz FSB and 1.52 V !

We didn’t have a Core 2 Duo E6600 handy for comparison, but our E6700 sample reached 3.46 GHz, using the Intel Boxed Cooler, to keep value comparisons fair and simple.

Test System

We tested the Core 2 Duo E6400 at standard speed plus the highest stable speed for each cooler type ; 3.10 GHz for the stock cooler, 3.15 GHz for the CNPS9700 and 3.33 GHz for the 3D Galaxy II. The E6700 was first compared at its specified 2.66 GHz clock speed, then at 3.33 GHz to match the E6400’s maximum speed, and finally at its maximum stock-cooled stable speed of 3.46 GHz.
