Onkyo Windows 7 Tablet Costs $1129

Japanese manufacturer Onkyo is offering three Windows 7 tablets here in the States thanks to importer Dynamism. The prices are considerably high, costing consumers a meaty $779 for the TW117A4, $979 for the TW217A5, and a surprising $1129 for the TW317A5. At those prices, Windows 7-based notebooks may be a better option.

"A long-time authority on audio equipment, Onkyo is edging their way into the portable PC market with a variety of unique designs, and their latest creations are no different," Dynamism said. "The new TW Series, their first foray into the slate tablet form factor, looks to be a crowd pleaser. With 3 different configurations to fit almost any budget and hardware requirement, there is a tablet to suit almost anyone’s needs."

Despite the price tags, the system specs for all three aren't too shabby. The TW117A4 includes an Intel Atom N450 CPU @ 1.66 GHz, Intel 3150 GMA graphics, 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB HDD, a 1.3MP webcam, a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen @ 1024 x 600, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

For $200 more, consumers can import the Onkyo TW217A5 featuring an Intel Atom Z530 CPU @ 1.6 GHz, Intel 500 GMA graphics, and a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen @ 1024 x 600. Other features include 1 GB or RAM, a 32 GB SSD, HDMI output, a front and read-facing 1.3MP webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

As for the $1129 model, Onkyo's TW317A5 has Intel's Atom N450 CPU @ 1.66 GHz, Intel 3150 GMA graphics, 1 GB of RAM, and a 11.6-inch capacitive touchscreen @ 1366 x 768. It also provides a 32 GB SSD, HDMI output, a 1.3MP webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

I would much rather have this than a tablet with a proprietary OS that can only run basic apps. Win 7 will make the tablet a much more flexible tool.

Being able to control your media center from your couch will be much easier.
The ability to RDP into any machine in my house while sitting on the john.
Hook up a USB controller and jam out some SNES games before bed.
Sit out in my car and work on my resume in office 2010 during my lunch break.

Why am I not surprised that it's overpriced?

So it is a basic netbook in a less useable form factor which sells for 4 times as much as it's competitors? Wow it must be magical! Will there be a website about a lawyer who used one for some strange reason during a trial?

NOTE TO STEVE JOBS: You really need to play catch on and release a $2,000 version of IPad. You cannot allow the most expensive tablet on the market to be a non-apple product.
