Frontier Developments' 'Elite Dangerous' To Support HTC's Vive VR At Launch
With the release window for HTC's Vive fast approaching (the company has famously stated the headsets will be available in limited numbers this year), we should start to see more announcements of games that support the headset in the coming weeks and months. Frontier Developments is one of the first game studios to publicly announce support for HTC's headset, and the company announced that Elite: Dangerous will have support for SteamVR and HTC Vive upon the launch of the Vive VR HMD.
Frontier Developments has already shown its commitment to virtual reality; Elite: Dangerous is among the best VR experiences currently available for Oculus rift developer kit owners. From a very early point in development, the team at Frontier Developments put a lot of focus into making its space simulation game an ideal candidate for virtual reality.
"We're thrilled to announce SteamVR support as part of the ongoing expansion of 'Elite Dangerous,'" Frontier Developments' Chief Creative Officer Jonny Watts said. "Back in December 2013 we were among the first to support virtual reality with a triple-A game, and for me, exploring, trading and fighting throughout 'Elite Dangerous" 1:1 scale Milky Way remains an unequaled virtual reality experience. We have been working closely with Valve to bring 'Elite Dangerous' to HTC Vive, and we are delighted with the quality we have been able to achieve."
Frontier Developments will be showcasing Elite: Dangerous on HTC's Vive hardware publicly for the first time at EGX in Birmingham, UK, from September 24 through 27, so if you happen to live in the UK, you may have a chance to try it.
For the rest of us, Frontier Developments is celebrating the announcement by putting the game on sale. From now until September 28, the game is 40 percent off the regular price on Steam and the Frontier Store. At least this way you can be ready when you get your own Vive.
