System Builder Marathon, Q4 2012: $2,000 Performance PC
Benchmark Results: Audio And Video Encoding
Our Apple iTunes and Lame MP3 benchmarks are both single-threaded, meaning that an advantage in either metric is achievable through higher clock rates and more effective architectures. Running 4.5% slower than last quarter's build, our new machine, overclocked, still leads in iTunes thanks to its Ivy Bridge pedigree.
Lame derives a little less boost from this quarter's newer CPU architecture, handing the lead back to the more aggressively-overclocked Sandy Bridge-E-based Core i7-3930K.
In contrast, HandBrake and MainConcept are both capable of using all available cores, giving the six-core CPU we used last quarter a leadership position we'd typically use to justify a more complex processor in our high-end budget.
