AMD Announces New Multi-Core R-Series CPUs

This week AMD announced a host of new multi-core CPUs for its R-series embedded line as well as a new discrete GPU promotional program. The program combines one of AMD's new R-series CPUs with discrete Radeon E6460 or E6760 graphics and is designed to offer more choices and savings of up to 20 percent to embedded designers with high performance requirements.

"There is a need for a greater variety of processor and graphics options in several market segments ranging from storage to digital signage and gaming to meet ever growing performance requirements," said Kamal Khouri, director of Embedded Products, AMD.

"The AMD Embedded R-Series CPU platform targets performance-intensive embedded applications with a new discrete graphics program to meet the diverse, high-performance requirements of the embedded engineering community. These new choices offer higher compute and graphics throughput plus compelling TCO for the embedded market."

AMD's new CPUs include the quad-core 2.3 GHz RE464X (3.2 GHz max boost frequency, 35W TDP) as well as two dual-core offerings. These are the 2.7 GHz RE272X (3.2 GHz max boost frequency, 35W TDP), and the 2.2 GHz RE264X (2.8 GHz max boost frequency, 17W TDP). All three are already available from ODMs.

This needs to be retitled. They are new APUs, not CPUS. To me...a CPU needs to be unburdened by a integrated GPU

Why are we still on dual and quad core?!! Is it because anything multithreaded should run on a GPGPU and anything not multithreaded should run on a single core CPU, and they are only doing dual and quad core for certain legacy software?

The program combines one of AMD's new R-series CPUs with DISCRETE Radeon E6460 or E6760 graphics.

Yes but no no no, come on AMD people make with the new FX line daddy needs an upgrade ... sigh ... :(

I really feel bad for the people who have stuck by AMD and the fact AMD can't make a quality CPU anymore. Really pathetic.

Never felt the need to go intel just because I couldnt justify the cost to myself. Now I have a 3570k powering my machine, go figure ay =)

    The i5-4670K isn't a CPU then?

    Face it, it's just marketing.

Does this mean Steamroller chips will not be called FX ?

These are embedded chips. While they may end up being based on Steamroller or Piledriver, they aren't high end.
