Imagination Adds Six-Cluster PowerVR Series6 Model

The company said it is now offering a six-cluster PowerVR GPU IP core, in addition to previously announced two-cluster and four-cluster designs.

The new PowerVR G6630, however, is not just aimed at pure graphics tasks, but at general purpose GPU applications as well, which suggests that Imagination will be targeting the design for use with ARM 64-bit processors in microservers as well. Since AMD announced that it will be designing ARM processors, it is important for ARM to maintain the pace and expect AMD to strongly leverage its GPU know-how.

Imagination said that the G6630 raw processing performance ranges from 100 Gflops to more than 1 Tflops. For graphics alone, the design can "comfortably deliver the raw fill rates required for the latest high resolution smartphones, tablets and TVs, as well as the multiple screen support demanded by the automotive industry," the company said. All Series6 GPUs support OpenGL ES 3, 2 and 1.1, OpenGL 3.x and 4.x, as well as  WHQL-compliant DirectX10. Certain family members also support DirectX11.1.

No word on whether this is FP32 or FP64?

  • obviously single precision. we have only recently achieved sustained over 1TF performance in desktop/workstation gpus.

  • What about openCL, and how about a link to the Data Sheet, This is not an article it is an abstract of an article! Oh, Wolfgang Gruener, cut and pasted the abstract, that is par for the course for Wolfe!

I'd have loved to see ImgTec still in PC graphics. A card with 7750 specs utilising DTBR would be a monster. I'm wondering how much NVIDIA and AMD put into countering overdraw, especially with today's graphics, therefore a PowerVR solution could still surprise in this market.
