Blizzard's ex-CEO says Battlefield 6 will "boot stomp" Call of Duty this year because the franchise has "gone downhill" — calls it a victory for players as COD "won't be lazy" anymore

Mike Ybarra, Blizzard's former president who chaired the company through Microsoft's acquisition, is throwing shots at his ex on social media, but for good reason. Ybarra posted on X, saying, "Battlefield will boot stomp CoD this year. But the real win here is CoD won’t be lazy anymore, and we’ll all get better FPS games for it."

Battlefield has been enjoying one hell of a resurgence these past few days, with the latest entry in the series poised to mark a sensational comeback for the FPS genre as a whole. Battlefield 6 takes a back-to-basics approach that its rival, Call of Duty, has slowly drifted away from. EA itself tainted the shooter's legacy with Battlefield 2042, but the publisher is doing everything right at the moment—and one waned executive seems to agree. Ybarra's sentiment echoes the community reaction to Battlefield 6, with the game's open beta amassing over 250,000 players this weekend.

What Ybarra's saying is common sense: more competition results in better products for the consumer. If one company dominates the market—in this case, the military shooter genre—then it's bound to stagnate, and that's exactly what happened with Call of Duty. Many players also seem to despise the Fortnite-esque direction it has taken, littering the game with unsuitable collaborations that detract from the franchise's serious edge. Battlefield, on the other hand, is streamlining its mechanics, focusing on the core aspects of a shooter and ensuring it delivers the most polished experience in that area.

After this post, Ybarro received some backlash from users, who said he only hates COD because it's under Microsoft's jurisdiction now and, more importantly, how 2016's Infinite Warfare—one of the most disliked COD releases ever—still managed to outsell Battlefield 1, which was more hyped at the time. Ybarro replied with the safest answers known to man. He called Call of Duty "a mess," claiming it has "gone downhill" for many years due to persistent cheating issues, unrealistic installation sizes, and rainbow colors (whatever that means).

These are very real complaints associated with the franchise, but Ybarro doesn't list any positive traits for the competitor. In essence, it's like saying "you suck less" rather than "you're actually impressive."

Any empire too arrogant to acknowledge its fallacies has already begun to crumble. Still, Call of Duty is simply too big to fail, at least that's what Activision reportedly thinks, after witnessing the colossal success of Battlefield 6. A lot of players return to COD out of habit, so the question now becomes whether Battlefield 6 can ride the wave to change the status quo or is this all just a temporary mirage until they make yet another Modern Warfare with updated gun sounds and animations that lure people back like a pie sitting at a window.

Battlefield 6 releases on October 6 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it has relatively modest hardware requirements, with a 60 FPS mode default on even the Series S consoles. The game's open beta will end tomorrow, so expect the news cycle to slow down, but you can bet EA will do everything in its power to keep the hype machine rolling for what has sprung up as their best shot at the military shooter crown since Battlefield 1.

Yeah, and it only took Battlebit Remastered and Delta Force kicking in the teeth of EA for Battlefield to wake up.

...CoD has been same exact game since original MW2 (in 2009)
The only real additions were zombies, the exosuit, & prop hunt....3 changes in 16 yrs is not a good thing.

CoD is literally a scam anymore with new releases to get $ from ppl to play exact same game instead of just adding it as DLC which is all the additions have been.

This HASSSS to be a JOKE. Why are you guys like this? The SAME nonsense was said about 3, and 4, and 1. Not an exaggeration. Look it up. Call of duty is in the best place its EVER been. It has more players than ever before, and is selling more than evsr before.

I get it upsets people that call of duty is so popular. But its only grown. Thats just a fact. And no battlefield game has evsr had an effect on cod at allllll. They genuinely dont care. 4 came out at one of cods worst times, and still got utterly dominated by some weird scifi cod games... soooo.

Yeah. Battlefield has never even hit halffff the player base of cod. Ever. The same thing every. Single. Time.

    Stop.

Why are you making this up? Number one. Battlefield has never ever beaten cod a single time, ever. Not even half the sales. Not even close.

Battlefield 4, 3, none of them made a dent in cod and those were beloved too.

Cod hasn't changed?? They redid the engine for the new modern warfare LATE last gen. Which added numerous features like leaning, like mounting, entirely changed how guns feel, the reload animations, all of the animations were upgraded. They added physics to doors, and ways of breaching.

They also added omnimovement?? Which is brand new, a straight up MASSIVE innovation to fps games. Sprinting in any direction, leaping in any direction, sliding in any direction. Thats not small.

Tney also added dmz, an entire extraction game basically, and warzone. Warzone is bigger thsn the base game now.

    So dont make things up.

People said word for word the same thing about battlefield 3 and 4.

Whats even funnier? A lot of the changes and even gun play and animations, are torn STRAIGHT from new cods. The animations ars similar, tney added mounting and leaning just like cod, they added the options to doors from cod . They added LEAPING from black ops. Oh and gun smith! Lol. Which is still better in cod.

More was added to black ops 6 from the previous game, then had been added to battlefield 6 from freaking 4.... lol. Cmon now.

I beg to differ on the “lonely at the top” remark. It’s more like lazy at the top. Again, these big companies are just milking established franchises. Games have little fun factor other than mostly graphical facelifts.

.....when did I say it did?
I never mentioned anything about it in fact.

How's that humble pie tasting? Even the beta of Battlefield 6 has outdone EVERY CoD game. If CoD doesn't fix their stuff they will see BO7 flop harder than every AAA flop has before.

You not liking something doesn't mean it's not fun. I personally like when games don't change. I like Far Cry, give me a Far Cry game. I like COD, give me a COD game. While some people and reviewers complain that it's too much of the same, I applaud that I can still play a new chapter of a game I like instead of getting something unrecognizable.

I remember in 2014, there was still a "clan war" between Battlefield and COD players, each side saying that their game was superior. Then EA tried something different with Hardlines and everybody stopped talking about Battlefield all of a sudden, and COD raced alone for more than 10 years. Only now that Battlefield is going back to "more of the same" of what it used to be back when it was popular that we start praising the franchise again.
