Microsoft Announces Xbox One Exclusive Indie Title, 'The Turing Test,' With Teaser Trailer

Microsoft announced Bulkhead Interactive’s The Turing Test, an Xbox-exclusive title. You can see the teaser trailer below.

The teaser gives viewers a brief glimpse into the story driving this first-person puzzler. Set in the near future, The Turing Test lets players take control of Ava Turing, a space engineer seemingly marooned on Europa, one of Jupiter’s distant moons. In the game, players are asked to uncover “the hidden mysteries of Europa.”

Powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, The Turing Test is Bulkhead Interactive’s sophomore effort and has a tentative release date set for August of this year.

Now, I'm sure Bulkhead Interactive just saw the wonderful benefits of UWA and the Microsoft Store and didn't see the need to support any other platforms or distribution systems.

I think an eight person studio would qualify as an indie developer.

"Indie" doesn't mean small, it means independent from the big label producers/publishers. I don't think Microsoft owns Bulkhead so I think they still have their independent status. The X-Box exclusivity of this title means they are probably blurring the lines a little. Most likely there is quite the contract here with just enough leeway for Microsoft to say "look we're supporting Indie developers" but with pretty strict rules including the exclusivity with some money attached.

This seems to be happening everywhere. My local grocery story is now called "the Independent" even though they are very closely linked to a very large grocery chain. The store is obviously part of the chain in probably everything but ownership with similarly fancy contract writing.

Does this have anything to do with an ACTUAL Turing Test? Your article doesn't even make mention of Alan Turing.

Did Bulkhead receive money for the exclusivity deal? If they did, can we still consider them independent? And if they didn't, why did they take the deal?
