Oculus Rift No Longer Shipping with Doom 3

With GDC rolling around next week, it's no surprise that news (and rumors) are leaking out about the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

When the Oculus Rift first unveiled its Kickstarter, id Software legend John Carmack favored it with his endorsement. Presumably, a working relationship blossomed out of it, allowing Oculus Rift to land a deal to bring DOOM 3: BFG support at launch. For whatever reason, DOOM 3: BFG will no longer be a launch title for the Oculus Rift, and no date has been specified for when it might come.

As compensation, thee Oculus Rift devs have graciously offered up $20 Steam Wallet or $25 Oculus Store credit to all those who've purchased dev kits.

However, not everything is the bad or the ugly this week for the Oculus Rift. There were rumblings originating from Road to VR that a software update, touching down during GDC, would unlock an "experimental virtual reality mode" to allow Oculus Rift dev kit owners to play Team Fortress 2. Players will, naturally, receive a special Team Fortress 2 hat.

Engadget's recently confirmed that Team Fortress 2 will actually be Oculus Rift's first official launch game, and that Valve would be pushing out an update within the next few weeks. Unfortunately, Team Fortress 2 for VR will only be initially supported on PC. Mac OS X and Linux support are a possibility for the future.

Quite sure that the first is actually Hawken, as stated in their update prior to this one.

"The underpants economy tanked today, when news struck that DOOM 3: BFG would not longer be a launch title for the Oculus Rift, leaving thousands of underpants potentially unsoiled for the near future."

But really, Oculus Rift and Doom? Not a good combo if you want to maintain control over defecation...

correct me if im wrong here

but wasnt the whole reason doom bfg even exists because of the occulas rift?
how is it not a launch title

that said, this brings fear that it will be under utilized...

all i can really hope for is that they put out a custom 3d so at the VERY least, you can get 3d support for all games...

No one plays doom3, but there are thousands still playing team fortress 2 multiplayer.

A downslide? Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Do you even realize that this is a dev kit and not meant for consumers yet?

I don't care for Team Fortress 2, but this in no way speaks ill of the Rift.

Doom3 will still be made for OR it just missed the "launch date". My theory on what happened was Doom3 was already running on the old prototype version so support had to be hacked in. Now that the Rift has a proper SDK it will have to be implemented all over again.
