OCZ Technology, known for memory products geared towards overclockers and enthusiasts, unveiled its new do-it-yourself gaming notebook. The company has made some big pushes into new areas of the enthusiast market and hopes this latest venture will transform the DIY market.
The 15.4-inch barebone notebook features the Intel PM965 Express, NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GT graphics, 8x dual-layer DVD burner, integrated fingerprint reader, and the usual items found on a notebook. The barebone notebook will support Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors, up to 4 GB of DDR2 memory, and Microsoft Windows Vista or XP.
The notebook may not be the most innovative, but OCZ is promising to deliver unique value to its users. Tom’s Hardware spoke to Alex Mei, OCZ Technology chief marketing officer, and he said “we are actively providing additional resources like guides, validated lists, and video guides are on the way.” Mei concluded that "we’re also working with resellers to offer bundles.”
The barebone notebook does appear to capable of delivering adequate gaming experience, but OCZ hopes to win over more than just the hardware enthusiast, the company also hopes to attract mainstream users as well.
Eugene Chang, OCZ product manager noted, “for years consumers have wanted to build their own mobile computing platforms, but the product offerings and market simply did not serve them as they did in the desktop do it yourself segment.”
Pricing was not available at the announcement, but expect your favorite e-tailers to begin stocking within 10 to 12 days. For those seeking a larger setup, OCZ hinted at a larger 17-inch notebook being prepped for launch at this year’s Computex in June.
OCZ acquired Hypersonic, a boutique PC vendor, late last year. The company has been selling fully configured notebooks under the Hypersonic brand since then.
