RoboHornet Pro: Microsoft Snubs Google, Mozilla Concurs!
Last week we broke the story of RoboHornet, a new Web browser performance benchmark. Today, we chronicle the fallout of what is perhaps the worst-received benchmark launch in history, plus add the results of Microsoft's counter-move: RoboHornet Pro.
RoboHornet Pro Results: Windows 7 And 8
Windows 7
Despite the year-and-a-half-old Internet Explorer 9 earning a respectable second place on Windows 7 in the original RoboHornet benchmark, Microsoft is making RoboHornet Pro all about IE10.
With no Internet Explorer 10, none of the Windows 7-based Web browsers are able to pass RoboHornet Pro. All of the browsers represented by black bars display the "Matrix" animated background with heavy chopping, so their completion times don't really mean anything. They all fail. Opera is represented by a blue bar because it doesn't display the background animation at all. Opera is the only browser to exhibit this behavior, automatically disqualifying the Norwegian browser from placing. It extra-fails.
Below is a video of all five eligible Windows 7 Web browsers running a sample iteration of RoboHornet Pro (the irritating stuttering, chopping, and freezing is what actually happens during the test, it is not an issue with the video or your machine).
Windows 8
Predictably, Microsoft's own Internet Explorer 10 is the only browser to pass RoboHornet Pro on the Windows 8 RTM, earning an average completion time of 3.7 seconds on the desktop and four seconds for the Metro version. All the remaining browsers exhibit heavy chopping of the background animation, rendering their completion times void, while Opera is again unable to display the background animation at all.
The video below contains a sample iteration from all eight Windows 8 RTM Web browsers running RoboHornet Pro:
