Gigabyte Unleashes New Gaming Laptop with Haswell, GeForce

Gigabyte released its lightest 15.6-inch gaming laptop to date, measuring just 0.822 inches thin. Called the Ultraforce P35W v2, this portable gaming machine packs a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, and up to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M GPU with 6 GB of GDDR5 VRAM. This notebook will be sold in different configurations across the globe.

The specs show that the laptop will either have a fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4700HQ "Haswell" processor (2.4 GHz / 3.4 GHz), or an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor (2.5 GHz / 3.5 GHz). GPU options will not only include the GeForce GTX 870M, but the GeForce GTX 860M (4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM). Gigabyte also lists the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600.

In addition to the GPU, the laptop features a 15.6-inch anti-glare screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and 170 degree wide viewing angles, four or eight GB of DDR3L memory (two slots supporting up to 16 GB), and two optical drive options: a DVD writer or a Blu-ray writer. The storage aspect supports a quadruple system consisting of SSDs and HDDs, such as four SSDs offering up to 2 TB of storage, or two SSDs with two HDDs for a max capacity of 4 TB.

"Gigabyte RAID STORM (3 mSATA SSD RAID 0) transmissions make for speedy responses while the massive storage houses larger files ready for access," states the PR. "With Gigabyte exclusive Supra-Cool technology, P35W v2 is able to pack dual thermal pipes plus two dedicated fans for CPU & GPU, ensuring optimal cooling for the most arduous of tasks and gaming."

As for other features, the new gaming notebook will provide two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI output, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a mini-DisplayPort, an SD card reader and more. There's also Wireless N and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, an HD webcam, two 1.5 watt speakers, a woofer speaker, and so on. Powering all of this is a Li-Polymer 75.81 Wh battery.

Gigabyte's laptop also includes a tool for tweaking the fans. Users merely switch between three modes, depending on the application's need. Presumably, gamers crank up the fan speed when running graphic-intensive games. There's also a LAN optimizer that prioritizes specific packets defined in the user settings.

Gigabyte doesn't offer pricing and availability, so keep your eyes peeled on AVADirect, Amazon, Adorama and other retailers listed here.

"or two SSDs with two HDDs for a max capacity of 4 TB" ; But with the Samsung M9T 2TB 9.5mm 5400RPM hard drive, 2 of those is 4TB, plus two 1TB SSDs makes 6TB.

It's really sad that they use the 47xxHQ instead of the 48xxHQ series CPUs from Intel. The price difference is rather small, but the extra 300MHz is quite noticeable. It makes perfect sense to go for such an upgrade in a gaming notebook.

Is it just me or does 6gb vram seem like overkill when the max monitor resolution is 1920x1080?

I'm not so sure, since heat is sug a big issue in the laptops, the slower CPU's probably allow more room for the CPU's to breath.

Stopped reading when I saw 1080p - Screen on this is a bit of a let down. MSI and Razer have both released slim gaming laptops with way better quality screens. Hopefully this will be priced accordingly.
