Minecraft Gets Release Date for Xbox One, PS4
Minecraft is coming to the newest generation of game consoles this summer.
It's been a big week for Mojang. The company this week announced that its Minecraft Realms subscription service is now available for PC and Mac users around the world, having launched in the states back in April. Now, the company has announced that Minecraft will arrive on current generation consoles in just a few months.
Speaking via the official company blog, Mojang's Owen Hill revealed that Minecraft for Xbox One will be released through Xbox Live Marketplace this August with bigger worlds and a greater draw distance than the Xbox 360 version. The PS4 edition will also be available in August and will come with bigger worlds and a greater draw distance than the PlayStation + PS Vita edition (which will be replacing the PS3 version and is also set to arrive in August).
If you're making the move from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, you won't be able to transfer saves, though you can transfer worlds. If you want to play on PS4, you can import both saves and worlds from the PS3 + Vita edition, but you can't import in the other direction (from PS4 to PS3 + Vita) because it's harder to make things smaller than it is to make things bigger.
If you bought the Xbox 360 version of the game through Xbox Live or played the disc version online, you can upgrade for $5. Otherwise, expect to pay $20 when the game is released. If you bought the PS3 version through PSN, you'll be able to avail of the same offer. Otherwise, you'll be paying the full $20 price. This offer is good for one year after release, so you'll have until August 2015 to take advantage and upgrade from PS3/Xbox 360 to PS4/Xbox One.
