Latest FSR 4 source code 'leak' lets you run AMD's AI upscaling tech on nearly any GPU — no Linux required

The latest version of AMD's FidelityFX, typically known as FSR 4, delivers a markedly superior result to FSR 3, making it a big win for those who can run it. But that privileged group is limited to folks with AMD Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs based on the company's RDNA 4 architecture. Or is it? As it turns out, you can actually run FSR 4 on nearly any GPU, thanks to AMD itself leaking the source code last month.

Strictly speaking, this isn't exactly 'new' news. As far back as June of this year, people were hacking FSR4 onto last-generation Radeon RX 7000 GPUs, but that trick was fragile and required Linux. Today's method is quite easy and should, in theory, work on virtually any modern GPU in the vast majority of DirectX 12, DirectX 11, and Vulkan games. We'll get to the specifics in a moment, but we should explain exactly what's going on here.

You know. If nVidia or AMD would just tell MS to generate DirectX 13 or a new revision of DX12 with upscaling in it, we would not have to faff around this much for something that actually makes sense to have.

Leaving nVidia's proprietary FP formats, MS just needs to say "well, let's use the common FP4/8 and implement this thing for everyone". Same with Khronos... But no...

AMD, come on. Give this to Khronos like you did with MANTLE. Do it.

    Regards.

Microsoft has an upscaler of their own! It's called "Automatic Super Resolution".

...it only works in Win11, and only on Snapdragon X powered Copilot+ laptops.

So I guess using int8 rather than fp8 would result in noticeably worse output due to quantisation.

Glad to have gotten the 9070XT as not much faster than my 6800XT for gaming, but destroys it for the AI stuff I use for photo processing, like Topaz Gigapixel AI's recovery mode. Generative AI would run at least 10x faster I'd say.

RDNA3 was tested at 4K and RDNA3.5 (8060S) at 1440p. Is there anything in RDNA3.5 that could give it an edge, like more INT8 per CU, or it basically identical?

Too bad the XDNA2 NPU is unusable for this purpose (would add latency).

That's not the case from what I've heard. The quality is there but the performance takes a hit. It is often worth it for RDNA3 even with this early and possibly incomplete version. I didn't look at RDNA2 testing but I assume no miracles there, and it will never get official FSR4.

The only thing that makes Borderlands 4 playable are hopes, dreams and tears of the fans. But it will have uses where other upscaling tech is inferior or just plain broken.
