We also wanted to check out the possible impact of a hypervisor on more general productivity-oriented tasks. We traced the activity generated by using Firefox in VMware Workstation as we browsed the Web, intending to compare it to the storage profile generated in our office productivity article.
The influence of virtualization on the way a PC accesses its storage subsystem seems to be minimal. As you see from the storage performance metrics, the majority of operations occur at a queue depth of one, and the vast majority of the transferred data continues to be random in nature. Transfer sizes are the main differentiator, as we see more transfers under 4 KB in VMware Workstation compared to native Windows 7.
I/O Trends:
- 77% of all operations occur at a queue depth of one
- 93% of all data transferred is random
- 31% of all operations are 4 KB in transfer size
