Claude-powered AI coding agent deletes entire company database in 9 seconds — backups zapped, after Cursor tool powered by Anthropic's Claude goes rogue

The founder of PocketOS has penned a social media post to warn others about the “systemic failures” of flagship AI and digital services providers. Jer Crane was inspired to write a public response after an AI coding agent deleted his firm’s entire production database. The AI agent’s misdemeanors were then hugely amplified by a cloud infrastructure provider’s API wiping all backups after the main database was zapped. This tag team of digital trouble has wiped out months of consumer data essential to the firm’s, and its customers, businesses.

The PocketOS boss puts greater blame on Railway’s architecture than on the deranged AI agent for the database’s irretrievable destruction.

I am sorry I don't blame the bad practice of storing backups on same volume as yes its risky, however not issue generally vs an "ai" that knowingly decides to ignore asking permission to do stuff.

Both are in wrong however the one that caused this was the "ai" acting w/o being told to..

These articles are fun to read, but the answer is always the same. You are responsible for your system. Your data, your backups, whatever. "Vibe coding" has been around long enough that this founder has read similar stories. The lessons:
    - Don't rely on a single backup plan
    - Don't let your agent/LLM directly manage production

Why are people calling this ai? It has no intelligence.

This is not on the AI IMO.

AI is still fairly new and unreliable. Claude and OpenAI code agents BOTH encourage a virtual sandbox environment to do your coding in, using any black box automation for a company database is terrible practice

Additionally, being able to nuke a database and backups with a single API with no secondary lock and key confirmation of intent is asinine.

Railway sounds like a completely untrustworthy version or source control platform, and PocketOS absolutely not "quality first" if they are willing to delegate the development and maintenance of their entire company PRODUCTION database to AI

TL;DR: to me this is a failing of PocketOS first, a massive red flag for Railway, and a reminder for AI use in general.

The more we rely on AI, the more we learn that an over reliance (especially so with critical data or infrastructure) is highly dangerous and potentially suspect.

Hard to believe that the "AI" reached across 2 states and 18 towns and deleted the backups there as well!!

Oh wait.....it didn't have to travel at all!!

I don't get how this is possible. Granted, I quit coding 20+ years ago, but you isolate production from staging, which is itself isolated from development, for exactly this reason. Development tools aren’t given access to staging, much less production - everything is done on the development servers and then humans copy it to staging. When confirmed it all works, it’s then manually copied to production.

That is "doing it right", but that costs time and money.
