Sony SDM-HS94: Benchmark Design

Previous Next
1:04 PM - 06/06/2005 by Benoit Dupont

The Sony SDM-HS94 is older than the other monitors we tested for this article, but it's a reference and we felt we had to test it. Its 25 ms latency is clearly behind the times, but its price has come down to $650. That's affordable for a Sony, especially since the manufacturer's talent for design is beyond question.

Sony SDM-HS94
Diagonal measurement 19"
Native resolution 1280 x 1024
Contrast 700: 1
Brightness 250 nits
Latency 25 ms
Colors 16.7 M
Viewing angles H/V 170/170
Loudspeakers None
Connectivity VGA, DVI
Average price $650/€550
Design: Copy/Paste

The design of the Sony SDM-HS94 is very classic; it resembles all the Sony monitors that have come out recently, with few exceptions. Obviously it's elegant and very nicely finished. The curved base is very well designed - there's no question about the fact that Sony knows how to design monitors with catchy looks.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics is in keeping with the design. Despite the buttons being moved under the panel, the OSD remains easy to use. But we would have liked to see a little wider range of tilt adjustment.
