Best AGP Card For Under $100

Radeon X1650 PRO
Codename: RV570
Process: 90nm
Pixel Shaders: 12
Vertex Shaders: 5
Texture Units: 12
ROPs: 8
Memory Bus: 128-bit
Core Speed MHz: 400
Memory Speed MHz: 400 (800 effective)
DirectX / Shader Model DX 9.0c / SM 3.0

With the 7600 GS at $100, it's a little too close to the much better performing 2600 XT, so we're dropping that card in favor of the extremely cheap Radeon X1650 PRO. Yes, it's a DDR2 card, but it's only $65, and would make a decent upgrade for an AGP system with an older card like a Radeon 9500 PRO.

Best AGP Card For ~$115

Radeon HD 2600 XT
Codename: RV630
Process: 65nm
Universal Shaders: 128
Texture Units: 8
ROPs: 4
Memory Bus: 128-bit
Core Speed MHz: 800
Memory Speed MHz: 700 (1400 effective)
DirectX / Shader Model DX 10 / SM 4.0

The 2600 XT is relatively new to the AGP scene, but almost as cheap as its PCIe cousin. This is the fastest DirectX 10 card available for AGP at this time, and surprisingly offers a great deal of performance at the $110 price point. Be forewarned that it's been reported the official ATI drivers don't work with the AGP version of this card, but the modified Omega drivers work fine.

Best AGP Card For ~$180

GeForce 7900 GS
Codename: G71
Process: 90nm
Pixel Shaders: 20
Vertex Shaders: 7
Texture Units: 20
ROPs: 16
Memory Bus: 256-bit
Core Speed MHz: 450
Memory Speed MHz: 660 (1320 effective)
DirectX / Shader Model DX 9.0c / SM 3.0

Essentially, this card is an overclocked 7800 GT, sporting a 256-bit memory bus and decent clock speeds; it's a very good performer and a solid card for the money.

The X1950 PRO is a slightly stronger performer at stock speeds, but supply seems to have dried up on the AGP X1950 line recently. If you can find an X1950 PRO AGP at this price, it's definitely something you'd want to consider.

Best AGP Card For >$200: Wait

Our former recommendation in this price segment for AGP was the Radeon X1950 XT, the fastest AGP card released to date. Why did we change our recommendation? First, the Radeon X1950 XT is getting harder and harder to find, so it's possible that Gecube isn't making them anymore. Second, there are rumors of a new AGP king on the horizon - it looks like there's an AGP version of the Radeon 38x0 series in the works!

If you're going to spend more than $200 on an AGP card, you owe it to yourself to hold off a bit and see if the Radeon 3850 will be gracing the AGP bus in the near future.
