HP adds HD-DVD format

The battle over what format will dominate when high-definition DVDs hit the market next year heated up on Friday after computer maker Hewlett-Packard said it will support the HD-DVD format backed by Toshiba in addition to the rival Blu-ray format.

The announcement comes after HP hinted in November it might split its allegiance after facing resistance from the Blu-ray Association - a group of companies supporting the format championed by Sony - about adding features to the format that will be available on HD-DVD.
